The trend is your friend

a 300yds allowed per week defense would be #3 in the NFL right now.

Saying we dream of having an average defense is one that gives up 353yds per week

The next 4 games will be crucial for offseason decision making.

Ellis is gone. Smith likely gone. Can Vilma be a viable OLB? More important, would we be better off using the $4.8mil of cap savings elsewhere? Harper & Bunkley have to be examined as far as their production vs. $24mil net cap reduction. Finally healthy we need to see Hawthorne accelerate to contending for most tackles (like he did in Seattle). Can Tez Wilson & Juneyah (when back) be more than situational role players?

This defense will be rolling next year when we have Payton back.

a silver lining...

I think with our D's second year under Spags, and Drew having an even year (doesn't he statitically play better during odd years?-I could be wrong, but thought that was the case)

I truly believe this team is going to take no prisoners next year.
I truly believe that the 2013 team will be the best team we have ever seen

The future is bright. I believe the saints will be as strong in the next few years as they've ever been. Defense looks like it might be middle of the pack at worst in the next few years and you know the offense will be top 5.

Sorry blues. I know everyone is trying to look for good things, but it's hard to find it in this defense. Philly and Oakland are not good teams. San Fran has a second year QB who looked like that today, but looked like Steve Young against us. 1 forced fumble, 2 sacks, 1 interception and 737 yards allowed in two games against Atlanta.

I'm not saying they aren't doing better. Only that they couldn't possibly have done worse then they started and they are still below average.

Blast away. This defense still isn't stopping the run and not playing defense worth getting excited about.

The only thing I can say positive is that every game they get absolutely run over at the beginning of the game and then make adjustments and play better towards the end.

That's a bull shite way of looking at things and you know it.

They couldn't possibly have done worse than they started.
Ok, but they could have not improved at all.

We've held plenty of teams in last several weeks to below their average ppg.
Atlanta is just one of them.

the defense played outstanding against Atlanta this past week and kept us in the game

bad teams were destroying the D early in the year

defense played well against san fran

their defense againt Philly, Oakland, and atlanta is worth getting excited about. We shut Atlanta's run game down after the 1st series.

re: The trend is your friend

They gave up a bunch of yards early on against Atlanta, but turned things around and played a very good game. I don't count the Philly and Oakland. They are bad offenses. And they both got 400+ yards on us. And it was only 6 weeks ago we were giving up 500+ to Tampa and Denver.

I need to see more before I call it a 'trend'.

Like I said, they are playing better. But the bar was pretty damn low before the Philly game. We aren't asking for much, an average defense at best. We give up too many yards and don't tackle well and don't create turnovers consistently enough to be a good defense.

I think I'm agreeing with y'all, I'm just not excited about improving into an average to below average defense.

our D basically scored more than we gave up against Oakland.

and they are average offenses ranked #14 and #15 in the NFL

the turnover thing is changing. 8 turnovers in the last 5 games

re: The trend is your friend

if yer lookin for hope I mentioned Houston in some other thread...

2010 30th in defense
2011 3rd in defense

They did that with 4 important personnel moves-

JJ Watt & Connor Barwin, two day one every down starters that are playmakers

Signed two major free agents, Jonathan Joesph shored up their weakest link at CB and Danieal Manning a savvy veteran safety in his prime was added.

We're just hoping for a turnaround to get in the middle of the pack. I believe it could happen with just a couple of personnel moves: Install a true sackmeister that has to be accounted for every down. Then add one more real WLB to go with Lofton & Hawthorne. Hawthorne has a solid resume but has not yet been 100% this year IMO.

And they did it letting Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans walk.

and that's a great example of cap management. Mario is a high impact player (when healthy). Butcha gotta look at Production to Price Ratio. His new contract averages a $16mil a yr cap hit. Anyone notice he has only had double digit sacks twice in his career?

There's discussion in other threads about potential personnel moves. Will Smith & Ellis surely gone will leave a void in snaps to fill. I certainly think we can do better with that $16+mil. Throw in almost $5mil if Vilma goes. That's enough bucks to go towards tying Graham up long term and get at least one such certified playmaker. The draft needs to yield one such player too. A Clay Matthews-JPP-Watt kinda player would be even more dramatic impact than what we have seen in Graham on offense.

Like I said, I see the improvement. It's just too small a sample size for me to get excited about.

I'm not sure we are in the same spot as Houston was. They've been stockpiling good defensive draft picks for years. Not sure Jordan, Jenkins, Hicks and Robinson are in that kind of talent category as Watts, Ryans and Connor. I will say that I think we have some good pieces to build around in Jordan, Greer and Lofton.

This offseason will be interesting with Vilma, Harper and Smith. This front office has been quick to cut draft picks and let free agents go. Besides Shockey, I can't remember many vets they have cut though. Can y'all think of any?

Their second half vs Atlanta was as dominant of a defensive performance as I've seen from this team in a long time. Atlanta is no joke on offense, and to hold them to 2 field goals, and less than 100 yards in the 2nd half was remarkable. If not for a freak game by Drew, we blow them out and are singing a different tune today.

If not for the early Atlanta lead and the expectation the defense would eventually collapse and stop creating three and outs I doubt Drew would have pressed some of those throws that were intercepted.

That's ridiculous.

There's no excuse for Brees to force all those passes and punt that much down 7 points.
And don't get me started on our end-of-the-first-half offense.
