| Headphone Audophiles: Need Advice (Posted on 11/29/12 at 5:58 pm)
I've been using Beats Solo HDs for about a year now. I'm getting tired of all the bass, so I'm shopping around for new headphones. I recently purchased some Sennheiser HD 558 headphones to possibly replace my Beats. I bought them off Amazon and they just came in today. Positives: - A LOT more crisp and clear than the Beats - Comfortable over-the-ear style - Seems to be a quality product; built well Negatives: - Not loud enough; I'm not trying to blow out my ear drums regularly, but with volume turned all the way up on these, they're not loud. - Sound leakage while wearing them is very poor. Don't really need my boss walking up to my desk and hearing "I'm in that two seat Lambo with your girl, she tryna jerk me." - Lacks in bass a little. I understand I'll have to sacrifice some bass for the clearer sound, but even on my bassier songs, these seem underpowered. I'm leaning towards returning these to Amazon and trying a new pair. Possibly Sennheiser again, just a better model. Can any OT audiophiles point me in the right direction? I figure since most constantly hate on Beats, if I'm switching, I should get plenty of sound advice. Pun intended. tl;dr: Had Beats, want a change. Need new headphone suggestions with these qualities: - Over the ear style - Decent to minimal on sound leakage - Decent, non-overpowering bass - Crisp, clear sound - High volumes possible

I heard nice things about Bose but I'm too poor to have them myself.

Could spend up to $300. Prefer something around $200 though. I'll sell my used Beats, and I think I can get $150 for those.

it would also help if we knew your music. But from the top of my head I can recommend The Denon AH-D5000 or the Ultrasones Pro 900 as closed headphones--generally for bass and isolation. Which is what I assume you were going for, considering the Beats.

I think this will definitely be a must for me. Obviously, made a mistake with the Sennheisers being open.

I'd go with in ear buds. The over ear headphones look cheesedick

But they sound much better. Only insecure folks worry about "looking cheesedick"

if most of what you're listening to is pretty heavy, and you want driving bass, sony mdr-v700's have some serious power. they've been around since the late 90's, unchanged model 50mm drivers and a 5-30,000 hz range are about as get as it gets, and you can find em for under 100 nowadays. although the knock on them is that they dont hold up well in the long run for ever day use - they're really specifically designed for prof. use, and in bass heavy genres, beatmatching during sets, etc if you dont want that much power or if you're worried you'll beat em up, i'd just get a pair of mid-range shure's. Shure sound > bose sound at matching price levels. Shure value >>> Bose value at any price level, easily. what you pay for with bose is the prestige and the lifetime support, neither of which makes up the price difference IMO ETA: i had no idea beats were fricking $200. i thought they were around 80. pretty brilliant marketing strategy though. 1.Build shitty headphones, but make them really expensive so people think they're not shitty headphones 2.get famous rapper to endorse them 3.??? 4.profit

you can find the d2000's for <300 and ultrasones makes excellent midrange stuff as well. now that i think about it, I'd actually probly go with ultras over shure if I wanted to spend ~150. i think the dj1's are around there, and they have a great rep
