| Any OTers know anything about Hampton Roads, Virginia area? (Posted on 11/29/12 at 5:19 pm)
Live in Arlington now but have interview next week in Hampton... I would be working in Hampton and Newport News. Been reading most of Hampton is ghettofied although I'm sure their ghetto has nothing like back home. Living near the beach would be awesome but I've read it's a bitch to commute through the tunnel from Virginia beach. We would probably live in Newport News or Yorktown. Don't really want to move but might not have much choice. I'm not military though. Never been there.... Any advice?

Not a bad place to live. I was raised here but went military. Ended up in Baton Rouge after discharge for 20+ years. Decided to move back to Newport News to help out the folks (elderly). Been back 10 years. Yorktown nice place to settle, good schools etc. Traffic close to but not quite as bad as Baton Rouge. Plenty of stuff to do....the beaches at Va. Beach, Outer Banks...surfing, paddleboarding, kitesurfing etc. 3 hour drive from NN to the ski resorts in winter. Lots of museums for history buffs. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the reply... We started looking at Williamsburg last night. If the offer is good we might take it, move to Williamsburg and I'd commute 25 miles for work. I would only be working about 16 days a month.

It's not a bad area. Like any there are great spots and not so great spots. My daughter went to CNU in Newport News and my son is currently at ODU in Norfolk. I would not want to have to go through that tunnel twice a day during rush hour. Personally I'd live on the same side as I work.

Got plenty of experience here....email me if you want more details. Moved from Baton Rouge to Newport News three years ago. Lasted 6 months there. Hated it. It is ghetto white trash to say the least. Don't live on the soutside (va beach or norfolk) if you work in hampton as the tunnels are hell. Don't live in Norfolk unless you want to get mugged. I now live in Reston. Moved here two and a half years ago and we love it here (except housing of course). Southern Va is nothing like Northern VA in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. In full disclosure, NOVA/DC was our first choice to move to from Baton Rouge so I may have had a little bit of a negative mindset going in. However, I don't think that I'm very far off at all with my comments. The only thing I can say is that if you HAVE to move down that way, definitely, 125% move to Williamsburg and commute in. In no way would I dare live in Hampton, Newport News, VA Beach or Norfolk. FWIW we lived in Carrollton and I commuted in via James River Bridge everyday. Not a bad commute at all, but there's nothing at all over there although it's clean and not ghetto! I would actually think about moving back to Williamsburg one day when we start to retire (in about 30 years!) Very nice and full of rich folks! Also, make damn sure you protect yourself financially (ie don't rush into buying a house). I'm sure you've heard the news, but that area is taking a beating with the economy and the military re-alignment. I think the area has lost 2 navy ships in the last three years? The port has seen an increase, but that area is projected to be declining significantly in terms of jobs and the economy. What company are you interviewing with BTW?

Reston isn't bad compared to a lot of the closer areas. I think we're going to buy our next place in Reston/Herndon

We love Reston and I work in McLean so the commute isn't terrible. Tolls keep going up, but I now just take the back roads and it's about the same. Come summer time I hit the W&OD trail and commute in via bike. Takes about 45 mins-1 hour, but that's about the same as a really bad traffic day and I'm getting my workout in at the same time. We lived in Herndon when we first moved here in a brand new apt complex off the toll road. There is a huge difference when you cross over Fairfax County Parkway IMO into Herndon. I'd stay in Reston if I were you. We've pretty much decided that's as far out as we're going to go. Ashburn is nice, but too far of a commute I think.

Isn't it the NBR equivalent to that area?

see I work in DC and the wife works out of town mostly(though her office is in Clarendon) And she is a "city person" so even getting her out to Fairfax County this time took effort I would totally live in Ashburn...even Leesburg(I cringed a little) because we can get a gigantic house. But she REFUSES to even consider moving that far out

Newport Bad News? The Hampton Roads/Newport News area is pretty rough. Your best bet is to live in Yorktown/Williamsburg and commute east or in Va Beach/Chesapeake and commute north over I-664

Yeah, I didn't figure it would be nearly as bad as NBR, but definitely rougher than the surrounding areas. One of my good friends is from Ashburn (about 30-45 min from DC) and told me his HS played Hampton Roads in the state playoffs for football regularly, and having to travel to that part of the state was like going into another country.

Sounds like we have the same wife. I bike a ton out to Purceville and back and it's beautiful out there with the hills and mountains. I would move there in a heartbeat (minus the commute). It would be way to far from civilization and the mall for my wife though!
