| Vacation suggestions for Salt Lake City or surrounding areas (Posted on 11/29/12 at 10:37 am)
My wife and I are interested in going to Salt Lake City in a month. Is it a good time for Skiing now, or later? Thinking about going to Park City or Deer Valley. Anyone know which one is better?

They are basically side by side. Sort of like Alta and Snowbird in the next canyon over. So you can stay at a hotel in Park City, or one of the Deer Valley lodges, and ski both. Or you can go up Little Cottonwood Canyon and ski Snowbird and Alta (but stay at Snowbird--the Alta accomodations are a bit more spartan). The skiing is fabulous either way, though Snowbird's average run is much more challenging, and there are fewer intermediate and easy runs. There is lots more night life, restaurant variety, etc. at Park City/Deer Valley. If you're a skiing purist, do Snowbird/Alta. If it's a fun skiing holiday with emphasis on after-ski activities as well, go Park City/Deer Valley. It is possible to stay at Park City and go over for a day to Snowbird, but it's about a 45 minute drive each way in good weather. Or, as the poster below says, you can stay down in SLC and drive up to different resorts on different days--but then you miss whatever ambience there is of staying right at the mountain, and you don't want to drive the roads (especially the road down from Snowbird) after you've had a couple of apres ski cocktails. . And they already have a ton of snow.

I've gone in late January and it was the best powder I have ever seen. Also been early March and it was still ok. The wife and I like to stay in SLC, and hit a different mountain each day. They are all equidistant from the Sandy area. 20-30 minutes to get to each. Alta, Snowbird, Solitude. Don't remember the other but it was a snowboarders playground. PSA: Skip the restaurant hostess lines. They were always 1-2 hours long. Walk straight into the bar whereever you go. They are always EMPTY.

fabulous skiing all over the area. If i recall, you can take a city bus to the mouth of cottonwood canyon, then catch a shuttle in to alta and snowbird. or drive up to park city and deer valley. at deer valley, the valets come to the car and carry your skis to the racks. Deer valley = more expensive = less skiers. the snow is dryer than in colorado.

Yeah we won't be skiing all that much. Maybe one day. Just looking for good places to shop visit or sight seeing. Of course that includes night life. We will be going in the week after christmas.

Unfortunately my wife is determined to go that week. I personally don't care if we ski. I just want to relax and have a good time doing whatever.

Thank you. That's it. Knee cap deep powder the day I was there. Wish I was there now.
