I have never posted on this board though I follow it everyday but I am now in need of some help and hope that someone on the OB has some information. We are moving to South Africa and I want to bring a rifle and handgun with me but have no idea where to look for information on how to do that. Any ideas?

Yeah you can own them and a guy with my company said that you can't buy them but can bring them....he just didn't know the process to get it done.

Customs is a good place to start. You can also call some of the companies that offer hunts in that part of the world to see what paper work they are required to fill out to bring them in.
Also try and keep there case somewhat low key. Some airports and baggage handlers don't care for US Hunters...
Also the pistol maybe a no go all together.

I would talk to the people at your company that might have been there before, contact customs agency, look up the governmental websites for S.Africa. It may be as simple as checking your locked gun case on the plane ride over and pick it up at the terminal. I have no idea.

If you find out it's legal, stick with handguns and rifles that are internationally popular. For example, if I were going to bring some, it would be a Remington 700 and a Beretta 92.

Thanks! Apparently I need to get the permit to import approved by South Africa authorities in advance....better get on that paperwork

Semi Automatic Shotguns or Handguns
For Semi-Automatic shotguns or handguns, you must supply a letter of motivation stating the reason for wanting to bring a semi-automatic/handgun to hunt in South Africa. It must be an original request; with an acceptably good reason otherwise consideration will not be granted. If you wish to bring a Semi-Automatic shotgun for bird shooting, or a custom made handgun the application should arrive 35 days prior to arrival at the Agents office.

Why would I bring something that parts are hard to find for? If I bring something that's internationally popular, I won't be gouged in terms of price and parts will be a bit easier to find. Do you know how many countries use Berettas or have them in their population? I imagine it's a lot.

Just have to make sure those parts are allowed to come into the country. Its not like shipping stuff from state to state here.

Good luck, man. Had a buddy live there for a year. Said he never felt comfortable. You're always waiting for the zulu(sp?) tribe to strike. Which is code for killing everyone.
