I recently acquired a Daniel Defense 300 Blackout AR. I had a LWRC in the past but sold it a month after buying it for a nice profit. I have an AK for throwing on the side of the tractor but finally got me my nice lil AR.

Anyways, What I want from this AR. I want to hunt with it and eventually I will suppress it. The 300 Blackout is a funny round (it mimics the 30-30 very closely) so my furthest confident shot will be around 200 yards.

I am looking at a 1-4x20 scope. I really like the VX-R by Leopuld. I am also considering the 1-4 from Vortex and any other good quality company.

My other option is an Eotech or Aimpoint and a 3x. However, when I start switching from Supersonic to Subsonic (for the suppressor) the Mildots on the 1-4s will be nice.

What ideas/suggestions does the OB have for me? Also, has anybody tried reloading this round yet? Anybody wanting to try reloading this round?

Just from reading this thread, you are the man. Congrats on 1) Getting a 300BLK rifle and 2) for having such exquisite taste. LWRC and Daniel Defense are two of my favorite brands.

I can't tell you how excited I am that you got 300BLK. It is an awesome round, especially when suppressed. It's unbelievable how quiet it is. Buddy of mine has an SBR he built in 300BLK (8" barrel) and we were hitting steel from 250 yards out with an Aimpoint. 200-215 yards is perfect.

The next build I'm planning will be Noveske-based 300BLK and it will have a 10" barrel. Very excited.

The VX-R Patrol is an awesome scope for not too bad of a price. Crystal clear and very versatile. It's a Leupold, so you can beat the shite out of it with no worries. The reticle is AWESOME. I love the SPR.

I have no experience with the Vortex. I will check it out online in the morning.

Only problems with mounting the VX-R on an AR will be issues of space. First, you will not have any room for a BUS. The Leupold has a pretty generous eye relief, but not generous enough for the necessary spacing to fit a BUS. Second, you will probably have to buy a larger charging handle or an extended latch.

It will be cheaper than an EOTech/Aimpoint w/ Magnifier, and will weigh less as well. Would be perfect for medium range hunting, and you'd be the envy of your range.

In regards to reloading, I have not done it yet, but my aforementioned buddy reloads his rounds. I'll get some advice from him for you.

Congrats on such an awesome rifle.

Very much appreciated. The LWRC was in 5.56 but I wanted something different and IMO, better. I built my FIL a DD a few months ago and could not stop admiring the build quality of it and knew that I was going to end up with one.

I love everything that I have seen and heard about the 300BLK so far. I was supposed to go last weekend to put some lead down range but had some issues come up. I will be at the range this weekend to put a few hundred down the pipe. I wanted to get a SBR really bad, especially since it is 100% efficient at 12" of barrel. However, I live in LA and hunt in MS. I am not going through the hassle of notifying the ATF every other weekend. No such issues with a 16" barrel and a suppressor.

I looked at the Noveske but honestly could not justify it. Maybe a Noveske barrel but not a complete upper. Again, thats just my opinion.

I love how light the Leopuld VX-R is. I have a set of Magpul BUIS (going for light weight) that will fit nicely under the VX-R. The VX-R will be mounted on a Larue QD 103 which should keep everything aligned. I dont believe there should be any problems running this setup, just wanted to know if you knew of any better options. Other than SB, of course.

Please do pass on any advice you get on the 300BLK. It will be my first round that I reload and I have gotten all of my information off the net so far but any firsthand experience would be nice.

Thank you again. Any further suggestions/advice is appreciated.

PS, If you are serious about building one in the future, you may want to start buying ammo now. I am trying to buy all that I can and I am already having problems.

ETA: What do you know about cans? I am looking at a YHM, SDN 7.62, and Cyclone.

The quality is top of the line. If you ever have to deal with their customer service, you will see why everyone says they are the best. Extremely efficient and very easy to work with. I had a guy named Jeremy that was extremely helpful. You shouldn't have to deal with them, though.

Totally understand. I use a lot of Noveske because potential buyers love it and it keeps the sale value high. I will put Noveske barrels on all of my builds no matter what. They are such fine work.

I didn't know that you'd be getting a QD setup. Very smart, that should be perfect. I assumed you'd just get high rings Good choice with Larue: buy once, cry once. You shouldn't have any problems at all with that setup.

Get the SDN-6. It is amazing. Being able to throw it on a .556 and .308 is a huge plus, and the price is well worth it. I think it's the best can on the market. Also check out the Gemtech Quicksand. Badass suppressor that is on par with the SDN, but it's a bit more expensive (a couple hundred).

I have heard that DD's customer service is top notch. One of those things, hope that you never have to call but if you do, you better hope they care.

And see I get the over build idea. I really do. Thats the idea behind a Larue QD on a scope that wil probably never be taken off. A PEPR (I think thats the name of it) would serve perfectly but I would rather do it right. With that being said, I will never see the benefit in Noveske over DD.

When I get my next shipment of ammo in a few days, I should have right around 1,000 round of UMC 115 grain target and play ammo. I am still trying to decide what I want to use as my hunting bullets but so far I have a half dozen boxes of 125 grain Nosler ballistic tip. I haven't heard much about these rounds but they should do fine on whitetail.

I don't know about 300BLK specifically but I have been handloading 5.56/.223 for quite some time.

If you can convert this brass to fit 300BLK (which I imagine you can) then getting brass will be super simple. And with the number of .308" diameter bullets on the market, your options for loading are massive.

If you want information on my reloading process, I have no problem explaining it to you. It's pretty basic but gets the job done to make my rifle shoot 1/2MOA (forgot to mention mine is a 20", not a 16" so it'll be a bit more accurate).

First let me say that I love ice cream sandwiches.

second, congrats on the rifle.

Third, i like what you're doing to it.

last, you can convert 5.56 and .223 brass to reload blackout but stick to US brass.

And to be honest, you're quite right. The difference between the two is marginal at best. My DD-based rifle will shoot just as well as my Noveske rifle all day.

People get the designer AR parts to maintain sale value. and for dick measuring. I will admit I do both of those. It makes it easier to turn a profit, it sells quicker, and it's awesome going to the range and have everyone see the Noveske Cross and to hear all of the "wow"s

DD is definitely a top brand. On par with the best. My rifle that I've kept (can't make myself sell it right now, love it too much.) has a DD upper with Noveske barrel and a Noveske lower with DD LPK and LMT stock. Shoots like an absolute dream.

If you haven't, check out AAC's complete 300BLK AR they released. Near impossible to find, but they are BADASS. I'd love to get one of their uppers. Since they invented the round, I'd imagine they can build a damn good blackout upper.

Bapple, I would greatly appreciate it. I can get my hands on all the necessary equipment but I do not own the 300 BLK dies and presses yet. Once I get those, I may get you to further explain the process to me. I do not have a chronograph so I will just be going by the info I see online. I just dont want to continue paying over $1.5 for a round as simple as the 300 BLK. Barnes sure is proud of their factory ammo.

You can trim down 5.56 brass to fit 300 BLK but its a pain. I will be saving all of my brass and just reusing already made 300 brass.

Olgoi, so do I.

Carlson, I agree that designer and dick measuring is important. Just that is too rich for my blood. Amazing stuff that I dream about, but will stay a dream. I bet that mutant DD and Noveske rifle is a dream.

I encourage everyone to switch to 300 BLK. I could use someone to reload hot rounds for me and help figure out the ballistics of this thing..

Is the 300 blackout very different from the older 300 whisper?

Curious minds inquire.

It's pretty much the exact same thing. AAC made it just different enough to be it's own round.

The Blackout is SAAMI tested and approved. The whisper was not. Also, I believe the Whisper was designed to be more of a single shot round than an AR round. One can shoot a 300 BLK out of a Whisper barrel but not the other way around, much like the 5.56 and .223 thing.

A quick search online also showed this: whisper/fireball round started life as a .221 case, where blackout is a blown out 5.56 case

Gotcha.

About the same velocity and bullet weight? That more of what I was wondering. Should've been more specific.

The only manufacture for Whisper is Hornady (that I could find on CTD). They made the same round for Blackout with a Blackout tag on it. It is a 110 grain bullet. Blackout bullets go all the way up to 240 grain in some brands.

Basically, yes, they are the same round but it looks like the Blackout took off while the Whisper fell flat.

That's what I figured. I know nothing about the blackout and I'm just going off your comment if going back and forth between subsonic and supersonic loads and that reminded me of the whisper.

Seems like it would make a fantastic multi purpose rig

Thats exactly why I got it. I want to load it up hot with a Barnes 110 grain bullet pushing 2,700 fps for deer and then I want to switch to a 220 grain FMJ crawling at 900 fps for hogs at night. However, I need an optic that allows me to compensate for the difference. Leopuld makes a Blackout optic but its around $1,500 for it. I am hoping that I can make the adjustments with either the ballistic turrets or Mildots, both can be found on the VX-R for much less.

Mil-dots are extremely useful if you put in the time and practice to learn how to use them effectively.

If you get familiar with them you should be able to swap loads as much as you want with no trouble.
