Doesn't really matter whether the Hornets are title contenders or not, what matters is if they're his best option. If he decides the Clippers are out and Dwight stays with the Lakers, the Hornets may well be his best option.

I don't see Grevis coming back. If he keeps playing well, he may be a candidate to trade at the deadline.

Gordon needs to get healthy because I think he could be a very good fit next to Gordon.

doesn't it though? isn't this the whole reason he wanted out in the first place, supposedly?

I don't think he will consider New Orleans...seems like he would definitely choose LAC or another team over the Hornets.

seems pretty far-fetched that he would bail and then want to come back because of...direction?

Not really. When he left, what did he leave? An older team run by the league that showed no signs of being a legit contender in the future. Boom, Benson buys the team, we trade off pieces and bring in guys like Ryan Anderson. Oh yeah, that lottery that we won. We need AD to come back and ball and EG to show he is healthy for the long haul and this will be a very attractive destination, IMO.

CP3 lobs to AD in the Olympics were sexy.

Again, this scenario assumes an embarassing early playoff exit. Maybe someone like Jerry Sloan would make it right, but the Clippers team doesn't have a lot going for it outside of Griffin. CP3 has already seen how far 2 guys and a bunch of filler gets with the Hornets.

What teams? You can't just say "anyone but the Hornets" is the better choice without actually comparing the other potential teams. It's not like bridges were burned when Paul left. New owner, Management and a Coach that Paul likes, and much more talent and potential on the roster than when he left.

It's not some emotional pull with him "wanting to come back" it's about him choosing the team that suits him best for the next 4 years. If you think they're at the bottom of the list of teams he'd consider I don't think you're being objective about it.

it's just not something that will happen, imo.

Paul wants to win, and he wants to be in LA, NY, etc.

it doesn't seem likely that he would leave like that, then turn around and come back. If you want to believe that he truly loves New Orleans like nowhere else and is dying to get back here--all he needed was the organization to show some direction...then i guess it makes sense.

I believe he likes New Orleans, but he's done with that chapter...New Orleans is not a top free agent destination. If Gordon and Davis can legitimately show that they are a big 2 NOW that can stay on the floor, it's possible.

all just my opinion.

what other teams are in the mix? why wouldn't he choose them? I don't know about the new salary cap...i get that it's now more difficult for other teams to wiggle their way into the mix with sign and trades, but is it impossible?...they will try

This is a key to attracting any top flight FA this Summer, of course. I understand what you're saying but he didn't leave here on bitter terms. He's not winning anything with the Clippers, IMO. Just because he WANTS to be certain places, it doesn't mean that team can pay him. We shall see.

The thing that makes it extra difficult is that the big market teams ready to contend would have to do a Sign and Trade. Normally that might give the player leverage, but Donald Sterling is notorious for choosing profits over competing. He would probably take a ticket selling star back in return, but if you're going to give him an expiring shite sandwich that won't sell more tickets, he'd probably rather let Paul walk and go with a low budget Blake Show than pay a bum Paul's salary.

IMO there is no scenario in which Sterling lets Paul get traded to the Lakers and it would probably take Melo for Paul to get traded to the Knicks. So with those 2 contenders off the table, and in this scenario the Clippers are out too, who is next? I can't see Miami trading for him and Paul has already rejected Boston once. There just aren't that many options for him if it doesn't work out with the Clippers.

What about Dallas? Couldn't CP3 and Dwight both take a little less money to make it work there? I'd assume Cuban would have Marion's contract though.

Atlanta can pretty much strip down to nothing like Miami did because Josh Smith will be signing a new deal and their other big contract, Horford, will be easy to dump. Dallas will have $22 million committed to Dirk and a much harder to dump $9 million owed to Shawn Marion. Paul would have to be happy with Dirk and filler. I'm not sure that's more attractive than Anderson/Davis/Gordon/Monty.

Dirk is probably going to be out of the league in a few years. His production dropped off last year and he hasn't played yet this year. I don't see Dallas as an attractive destination for a guy in his prime who wants to win now. A healthy Hornets team could be one of the better options available next year if we can actually get healthy and show the league what we can do.

Yeah as others have said, the key for us is Gordon getting healthy and AD coming into his own. CP3 has stated before that he wanted to play with a legit SG, and I don't think he had Billups in mind when making that statement.
