I've never understood this. The ratings must be abysmal.

Because there are no available time slots on TBS.

It's Tyler Perry's fault.......again.

I imagine when the contract runs up it will probably not be renewed. I believe they lost State Farm as the big sponsor last season.

It's been nationally televised since the early 70's when Black college football was in its heyday and Grambling was sending more players to the NFL than any SEC school. After 40 years, it's become tradition similar to the Army-Navy game which is nationally televised despite the fact that neither school has been relevant for 50 years.

Difference between Army/Navy and the Bayou Classic is ratings. Many people watch the Army/Navy because they were/member of Army or Navy or other armed force.

What else is NBC going to broadcast?

I see the Bayou Classic being moved to a smaller venue within the next few years.

i don't see how it would get good ratings

1. nationally nobody gives a frick about HBCU football
2. at least 1 of the 2 teams almost always sucks, even for shitty HBCU football
3. LA is a small state without a media imprint. these are 2 small/shitty schools from LA
4. these schools don't produce a lot of rich donor-graduates to keep a national imprint and help support the game

Supposedly the turnout in the Dome was awful this year.

During Thanksgiving dinner, we had a discussion about the state of Black college football in which I said that it was going the way of Negro League baseball, and the older folks, who all went went to HBCU's during the era when colleges were still segregated, grudgingly nodded their heads in agreement. It's the flip side of progress. If race relations have improved to the point that this country will elect a Black President, that means that they have also improved to the point that the best Black athletes will no longer feel any obligation to sign with HBCU's. And if Hampton can have a Black homecoming queen, it should be no surprise that Ole Miss would have a Black homecoming queen.

I can't imagine NBC would continue to pick up the game year after year if it wasn't getting respectable ratings (though they did keep Whitney). just because not a lot of people show up for the game doesn't mean they don't watch it on TV. maybe i have a different view point because my black neighbors threw a party for the game every year when i was growing up. neither of them went to either school, but they had family that did.

I heard on the radio Jaguar Journal that the time slot is bought from NBC. Not NBC paying to put on the game. As long as they can find sponsors to pay I guess it will be on.

did we elect a black president in like 1975?

HBCUs haven't been relevant, sports-wise, for decades now. it has nothing to do with obama

i seriously doubt it's a bunch of 1-year deals. it's almost assuredly a long-term contract

the main sponsor left, so unless they get a new one there will be a severe paycut or it will have to go to another network

i never got this, and i grew up in a black neighborhood. the actual good teams have a super majority of black players, and you actually get to watch good football (and not that shitty SWAC bullshite). none of my neighbors went to SU/Grambling, either

On a smaller scale, The Advocate gets totally ridiculous with their coverage of this game. I don't understand why anyone would try and make a meaningless game for teams with very little fan support like Southern & Grambling into some big spectacle that hardly anyone watches.

There was a guy jogging down Airline with the game ball and being escorted by the police. My coworker was stuck in traffic b/c of it.
