The Great Society's Next Frontier

You Own It, Libs

This article is full of some of the most unreal ideas I've seen. But you know what? I think they're serious! Even scarier: I think the voters today are stupid enough to vote stuff like this through, despite common sense. Some of the gems:

quote:

Government needs to step in to counter the decline of the traditional company pension. The government currently gives large tax breaks to private retirement savings accounts like 401(k)s, breaks that overwhelmingly go to the top 20 percent of workers. It could instead use its resources to provide a universal IRA with an automatic enrollment to all Americans, as well shifting 401(k)s over to a public-private, defined-benefit plan.

quote:

unemployment only covers around 40 percent of the unemployed due to a variety of state-level eligibility rules. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that low-wage workers, in particular, are half as likely to receive unemployment insurance. Expanding unemployment insurance would provide greater security to those with more precarious employment who don’t currently qualify

Paid for by whom? Evil corporations?
quote:

The United States, Swaziland, and Papua New Guinea are the only three countries in the world that do not have guaranteed paid leave for new mothers. Paid leave makes it easier for mothers to return to work after a child is born as well as to maintain and continue their careers. It can also be expanded to cover both parents, a move that will strengthen women’s access to the labor market even more.

Man, those corporations must be LOADED!
quote:

Providing universal pre-K is another important step in ensuring all Americans have the most opportunity available...Universal preschool should be universally available for children age three and older, and feature well-trained teachers working with small groups of children, focusing on a full range of development. This will also benefit women who want to work, creating opportunities for both those women and the children who will gain access to much-needed early education.

Ah, a little sumpin-sumpin for the unions, too! Despite studies that programs like Head Start do not provide long-term gains in education levels.

And the entire section labled "Escalator" is just plain terrifying... summary of proposed "ideas" to make sure everyone, universally, is able to capitalize on the rising tide of GDP:

1.) aggressively expand the EITC to folks making up to $80,000 per year

2.) Creation of an Unconditional Basic Income (UBI). Yeah, you heard me right: unconditional base income. To quote: "This income is universal, so everyone gets it regardless of their income or work status, and it is unconditional. [...snip...] the UBI would go to everyone whether they work or not."

3.) "Predistribution" policies like: "a higher minimum wage, better rules for unionization, curbing the ways that big business uses the government to increase its profits (finance, copyright), as well as a greater emphasis on full employment."

And the closing sentence:
quote:

With the promise of health care completing the project of the 20th-century welfare state, liberals need to envision how to meet the needs of a new century.

Even millionaires and billionaires get it?

Would like to see how long that would last.

I posted this a while back was ridiculed as a nutty hack.

Looting IRAs 401ks and boomer inherited wealth will be used to prop up the welfare state.

I have had a heartfelt conversion.
As the weeks and months unfold, and I hopefully stand hand in hand with Rex at compulsery government-funded Lesbian Dance Therapy classes, this will be apparent.
Forward !

Shame, guilt, morals, and conciense are so passe that any notion of them is forgotten to most of America. Now we have to be politically correct, respect the thoughts and ideas of everyone(wee Toddy and gay marriage as an example or abortion) even when they are visceral assaults upon our beliefs.

I thought we already had something like that. It's called Social Security.

Creation of an Unconditional Basic Income (UBI).

This is not a new idea. It was proposed in the 70s under the name Guaranteed Annual Income. The closest thing to it in reality is the Earned Income Tax Credit.

GAI works like this:
The govt sets up a scale. Let's use family of 4 and let's say the GAI is 40K. When income tax return is filed at 30K, govt sends check for 10K. If you make more than 40K you get nothing.

Let's say family of 4 earned nothing in 2012. Mom had kid No. 2. Dad got laid off from the GM plants and really doesn't like the concept of work. They file indicated ZERO income. Govt sends them a check for 40K.
