I think my deer was stolen from me this morning

So I'm rifle hunting on a WMA this morning. I shoot a doe at 50 yards with a 30/30. Perfect broad side. She death kicks, and runs away. About 10 minutes later, I hear a shot nearby in the direction she ran. I immediately assume that another hunter just shot her.
I walk to the location that I shot her, but I find no blood, I decide to walk back to the truck to shed some clothes. When I get to the truck, I see another hunter walking out behind me. I ask him if he was the one to shoot, and he says yes. I ask if the deer had a bullet hole in her, and he quickly said "oh no no, she came from the opposite direction of your shot." He went on to tell me his story, about how 3 does came in, and he shot his doe quartering away at 20 yards with a 30.06. He finds no blood, but gets lucky and finds her 100 yards away in a thicket.
I ask him if he heard or saw my deer since it ran directly at him, and he was only about 150 yards from me. He said no.
He then says that he will help me look for my deer if I help him drag his out. I agree with this arrangement. We look for my deer a bit, but nothing. When we go to his deer, I immediately think to myself "that is the deer I shot". It had a small caliber bullet hole directly in the shoulder, and no exit wound. I helped him drag his deer out, and that was that.
Now I ask the OB, what is more likely; a 30/30 at 50 yards not going all the way through, or a 30.06 at 20 yards quartering away not going all the way through?
The guy was really nice, but I can't help but think he stole my deer. His story just does not add up.

Both should have gone through.
His bullet may have gotten lodged in the back hip though. That's what happened to me with my 30-06 years ago on a shot quartering towards me. (100yds tho)

If you didn't find any blood then you can't say he stole your deer JMO

the entry wound was directly on the shoulder blade, which doesn't make sense if the deer was quartering away...

the deer that we drug out, no blood anywhere
the guy claimed that he did not find any blood either, but that he just got lucky and found his deer after it ran 100 yards through a thicket...

It probably was the same deer and he also probably knew there was no real way for you to prove it. He got you to help him, knowing he wouldnt have to repay the favor. Sounds like a POS

I have hunted public land before, but this is why I don't do it anymore, I would rather just not to hunt, then to hunt and not know where other people are, and them to not know where I am
FWIW, sounds like it was your deer

Now THIS is a OB thread.
I don't know all the little intricacies and what's the unspoken rules for these things.

His Deer. Finders Keepers. You probably killed it though. WMA sounds like Neck/Head shot on does. Why didn't you head shoot it? Were you going to mount it?

Depending in ammo, bullet expands and will not go all the way through regardless how close you are

Shot a buck the other day at about 50yds. Quarter to me. Entered front of shoulder and no exit. Deer fell dead. 300 wsm 165 gr accu bond going 3100-3200 fps. Don't know if you find that relevant or not.

If they had been they both would have exited and the deer fallen over dead.

You gotta really want to hunt to go this route.

It's free. I see more deer on the WMA than my lease. I see nobody during bow season. Etc.
This is just a 3 day rifle season. I figured I'd try my luck. There were only 4 guys hunting the section I was in, just one of them happened to be right next to me.

because I had not shot the 30/30 this year yet (I know, I'm trash)
but I checked this afternoon and it was still on
