what's the proper procedure for this? The job is doing something else that I enjoy more and am qualified to do. It's a step up in my opinion. I've been told to speak with my current boss about it, to see what he thinks and how I'd do. What does everyone else think? How should I go about this? I've never had to do it before.

Most people won't interview anyone internally for a position before they get the ok from their current boss. Its just common courtesy.

My company basically requires you to be in your current position for two years before you're able to apply for another position without informing your current manager first. I've always told my manager and VP before I apply, just to get their feedback and support for the new position.
Been with my company for 14 plus years and in my 5th different job now...it has always worked out for the best for me (haha, especially the positions I've applied for and didn't get!).
Don't get too comfortable in your current job - every two or three years, look to move (another location or position) throughout your career and you'll enjoy it more and generally get paid a lot more just for relocating, plus promotions that come with moves.
