| So you think our suburban schools are so good? Guess again. (Posted on 11/18/12 at 10:24 pm)
Arthur Levin in the WSJ: LINK
quote:
Parents nationwide are familiar with the wide academic achievement gaps separating American students of different races, family incomes and ZIP Codes. But a second crucial achievement gap receives far less attention. It is the disparity between children in America's top suburban schools and their peers in the highest-performing school systems elsewhere in the world. Of the 70 countries tested by the widely used Program for International Student Assessment, the United States falls in the middle of the pack. This is the case even for relatively well-off American students: Of American 15-year-olds with at least one college-educated parent, only 42% are proficient in math, according to a Harvard University study of the PISA results. That is compared with 75% proficiency for all 15-year-olds in Shanghai and 50% for those in Canada. ....

Considering how we've cheapened a college education, stats like this mean little to me.

Thats what happens when your system revolves around making good factory workers and soldiers.

no shiite. Our schools are terrible across the board. Just look at the idiots in my generation. They don't know a damn thing other than celebrity gossip and reality tv. There is zero knowledge of history, civics, algebra, literature, or simple life skills (cooking, minor repair work, sewing, cleaning, ect.). This has lead to a generation who knows of nothing better. They don't remember when we used to make things, work for things, strive for things. All they can remember has been spoon fed. All they know is what's been given to them. All they know is going to screw them.

It's what happens when we play to the minimum and stop striving for excellence. We worry too much about the low achievers and not enough about excellence.

I attend a technical college (my second degree) and I tutor anyone needing help with Math or basic AC/DC electricity have had to teach kids how to read a fracking measuring stick and convert the related fractions... how many 32's in half an inch and the like... not to mention teaching them the metric system... this is what our High Schools are producing.

Hell! My fiancé convinced me to pay for my stepdaughter to attend a private school. For $450 a month , I've watched the school put my kid in the wrong car TWICE at after school pick-up, and once, the school brought me someone else's kid when I went to check my daughter out early. Yea! It's catering to the non-achievers. That's the problem!

The US was supposed to convert to the metric system forty damned years ago, and that worked out just peachy keen.

Combine this with apathetic parents and voila. Darwinism is not a ridiculous concept.

What a clusterfrick liar you are... How do you have a stepdaughter if you aren't married? If divorced, no longer your stepdaughter... Is it your stepdaugher you're lying about or is it your kid/daughter (you use all 3 in your lie)...your story just sounds really shitty (a lot like your life). You sound like the posterchild for non-achievers.

1. That is some cheap arse tuition for a private school. 2. If you believe in public school so much, why did you cave? 3. I've been in both the private and public school settings and have a near impossible time believing you've seen wrong children given out like candy, as you're implying. Schools are terrified of this very thing happening; and I do mean absolutely mortified of it. For whatever their failures are, getting kids to the right place isn't typically a problem.

The tuition cost are pretty much spot on, if it was a private school 35-40 years ago. For the cost he "claims" to pay it is a babysitters group.

Not my kid. It's called compromise.

I didn't realize Westminster Christian Academy was a "babysitters group". Thanks for the info.

For pre-K?
New detail, and depends on your definition of "private school" for pre-k. Short of being low income or having a child with a learning disability, you had no choice. However, the important point to be noted here is that you used a pre-k story in a thread where it doesn't fit, AT ALL.
