| Stinky washing machine remedies (Posted on 11/17/12 at 11:55 am)
My damn washing machine smells like mildew, and it makes all of my clothes smell the same when I take them out. I use Tide and dryer sheets, but it still smells. Renting the house, so am not gonna get a new one. Things I have tried unsuccessfully: Leaving it alone and hope it goes away Washing it a bunch of times on hot and nothing in there Doing the same with bleach 3 or 4 times Spraying febreeze in it Do you think the drain is clogged up or something? Once I figure out what the actual problem is, are there any easy fixes? Can I just use some sort of chemical to get it smelling right?

Washing machine cleaner. Try the Clorox version (good for regular and HE) and then Tide makes some too.

I remember looking for this about a year ago and never found it. Do I need to go to a hardware store or something?

Ammonia. And please don't add bleach as well unless you feel like dying.

I don;t like bothering him with stupid little problems. Only thing I have had him fix in 3.5yrs is the HVAC. His last tenant would ask him to change light bulbsquote:

Too much soap? Does the foam just sit there and rot? Shouldn't it all drain out with the water?

Half a gallon of vinegar in a hot wash (no clothes) should do the trick.

Our top loader had the same issue. Dealer said the cause is the door gasket. It stays wet after clothes are washed and if you keep the door closed when not in use it seals the tub off not allowing the gasket to dry causing it to mildew. Leaving the door open when not in use should stop the smell. If not, you may have to change the gasket.

This. We started leaving door slightly open on our front loader, and it really helped. Also cleaning residue around and beneath the gaskets regularly.

Yes. I have a top loading HE machine as well, and you can run it with Refresh. Also, leave the top open after you do a load to let it dry. Simple solution to a common problem.

If it's a front load, you need to wipe down the rubber part around the opening. It gets a lot of mildew, that's why it smells.
