As concerns Russia- This is some sort of mistranslation or false idea by Americans based on some popular cinematic images.
Russians use the terms otchestva which translates directly into fatherland. The other more popular term rodina translates into homeland.
There are statues and historical images of rodina mat or matyshka rossiya which translates into mother of the homeland or mother russia, but these are images that are in my opinion analogous to lady libery for the United States or Marianne the symbol of France.
