Are Republicans the true Marxists?

LINK /

quote:

Good grief. In a phone call to donors, Mitt Romney explained his defeat by referring to the “free stuff” that Democrats give their constituencies. He said that Obama’s strategy was to “give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government.”

I don’t deny the importance of pork. I lived for 20 years in Nebraska, and so I’m not unfamiliar with the “extraordinary gifts” known as agricultural policy. But it seems that today’s Republican Party is dominated by a perverse economic materialism that’s positively Marxist in its mechanical determinism. The idea that black or Hispanic voters tilt heavily Democratic because they’re “bought” by government handouts reflects a mentality that is extremely ideological. Hasn’t Mitt Romey ever heard of Lyndon Johnson. His “gift” to blacks was the Civil Rights Act. Or Barry Goldwater, the Republican who ran against him in 1964. He voted against the Civil Rights Act.

What today’s Republican Party can’t seem to get its mind around is that globalization has disoriented and disadvantaged large portions of American society, just as industrialization did more than one hundred years ago. Democrats aren’t “creating dependency” by inventing social programs, they’re responding to the social reality in the way progressives have for more than a century. I’m not in favor of the progressive approach, but the fantasy that politics is simply about everybody getting the best deal for themselves is absurd. We have an instinct for solidarity, not just self interest.

David Axelrod is right. Romney’s post-election remarks suggest that he’s stuck in the 47% mentality. It’s a gray place, one that essentially says that Blacks, Hispanics, and other who voted for Barack Obama aren’t concerned about the common good, but just about themselves. Not a message likely to win their votes any time soon.

I've noticed this as well. Some forms of libertarianism are even more materialist and relativist than the most leftist of marxist professors. The very idea of "values" is an obviously materialist notion.

Moreover, it seems on this board that everyone thinks that all inquiries into the truth or analyses of politics and economics are "biased," motivated by "power" etc. What is this if not an outright relativism to rival even the most strident Nietzschean?

Yes, the majority of this board that call themselves conservative or libertarian are Marxist. I just laugh and ignore.

I guess I shouldn't expect you folks to get the point, since you haven't the foggiest idea of what Marxism is about.

No.

And the basis of that quote is the most absurd illustration of denial I have ever seen.

GIMME DAT CHECK!

What an isolated and socially awkward person you must be. You honestly think you are the only mother fricker on this board with any hint of intelligence?

Marxism

The term is too fluid, and often too broad, to make this kind of statement.

re: Are Republicans the true Marxists?

Many of the first neocons were former Communists. They just took Communist theory and took the opposite side. It's not that they are Marxists, it's that they are radicals.

Though there's a lot of similarity between Randian "true believers" and red diaper babies. Like the insistence their ideas have never been truly tried so they can't have failed, as there is a failure of ideological purity.

But, no. The GOP is not Marxist. Neither are the Dems. Neither believes in an international worker's revolt to overthrow the bourgeois.

Step 1: Make a stupid arse "point"
Step 2: Get blasted
Step 3: Claim that your genius just can't be understood by plebians.

No, I don't, and I can assure you that I'm neither isolated or socially awkward, nor so rude as to call someone a "mother fricker" on a message board, in my e-cowardice and e-rage.

But in fact no one has addressed the point of the blog post, which is the materialist premises implicit in many republican arguments--a materialism the right shares with classical marxism.

Step 1: Be a jackass.

That's it. You are too awesome to be serious. Continue repeating step 1.

The point is too stupid to address. If you think there is even a hint of truth or accuracy in that blog post, you are completely lost.

Yes, of course, the point is not to be taking literally...it's obviously a riposte to ludicrous right-wing claims about Obama.

The serious kernel, however, is that right-wingers and marxist left-wingers sometimes seem to share basic premises, namely, materialism--the idea that all ideas etc. are driven by economics.

Not only are you socially awkward, you have must have rage issues if that is what you are projecting.

You are being made fun of, no one is angry with you

It's amazing how block-headed this board can be.
