I read some of the threads in the FAQ's thread but I'm just looking for a ball park figure.. Could I get it done for < $500-600 and be happy with it?

The best I've priced to piece one together is in the $800 range....I'll try and dig up the links I saved.

you could do one for about 800

THEN be prepared to spend at least 800 more for some good optics

My question is would it be any better than what you could buy at the same price?

The WW15 by Wyndam Weaponry (The folks who started Bushmaster) Runs about 800. My brother got one and it seems to be nice.

You will need to have this lower shipped to your FFL and they will charge a transfer fee for this service

The lower is considered the "gun" and everything else is "parts"

Sign up for the Palmetto State Armory email. They send a bunch of them but they have some relatively good deals. If you are wanting to go cheap you can buy a blemished lower from them in the $55-69 range then they have complete lower parts kits for $109-149. They will also run deals on basic uppers for $279 minus the bolt carrier group and charging handle which run around $100 for BCG and then the charging handle varies from $25+ sometimes they have free shipping sometimes they don't. You are also going to have to pay FFL transfer fee $20+ other than that you should be set minus optics.
