| Jobless claims skyrocket to 439,000 (Posted on 11/15/12 at 7:33 am)
Last week the claims were 361,000. The surge in new jobless claims last week was the biggest one-week increase since September 2005. Apparently the BLS knows the election is over..... FORWARD! ETA: LINK Let's see...hurricane Sandy hit on October 29, or 2.5 weeks ago. Hmmmm....

The U.S. government will release weekly jobless claims and the monthly consumer price index at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Claims are expected to jump to 380,000 in the week ended Nov. 10 from 355,000, according to economists surveyed by MarketWatch, but the increase is likely to be a side-effect of Hurricane Sandy. The consumer price index for October, meanwhile, is projected to rise a scant 0.1% overall and by 0.1% excluding food and energy. Falling oil prices have reduced inflationary pressure. It isn't because the election is over.

Sandy had some effect, but there is no way it accounted for all of that.

So if being at 360k consistently (Which is about 10-20k under what we have been running for the past few years) brought unemployment from close to 9 percent to 7.9 inside of a few months.... Logically, being 60k over that would reverse those three months and unemployment would be up to a minimum of 8.5, right?

I know some people are out of work because of Sandy but does that qualify them for unemployment? Also, wouldn't Sandy have created jobs that might offset jobs lost?

This is the "right" direction right? Or, is Obama trying to recover from the 1st term Obama recession?

Yes, if their place of employment is closed.

You would think there would be an uptick in construction and an increase in hiring of clean up type workers.

Good point. Plus the unions in NJ and NY probably won't let them work anyway.

It's because of Hurricane Sandy?? Are you f**king kidding me? A spike of about 60k more than what they thought and they all came from NJ/NY? I swear, some people would let Obama take a sh*t in their mouth and they'd talk about how good the peanuts taste...

A joke I read earlier today, Obama is praising the efforts of FEMA in the effected areas. Millions without power, fuel, food, water for this long and he thinks it is being handled better than Katrina.
