| "Should we raise taxes" is the wrong question on both sides. (Posted on 11/13/12 at 7:59 pm)
This is coming from a solidly conservative republican who watches fox, listens to Rush etc. Asking whether or not taxes should be raised on the rich is like asking whether we should let the fox stay in the hen house if we charged him more. The focus shoud be more on income inequality. A lot of people (the Rush's, Fox's included) act as if everyone in the top 20% pulled their selves out of poverty by the boot straps and through blood, sweat and tears, rightiously earns income that is perfectly in line with their output and that is simply not the case.

most of them did. 90% of millionaires are only millionaires for 1 year.

First, this sounds a bit like I'm a conservative so people don't throw tomatoes at you. That being said, in general, the bottom 50% make around 2% of wealth and pay 0% of taxes. The top 10% makes somewhere around 40% and pay close to 90%. One could argue that the poor are taxed close to the right amount and the rich are over taxed. That is my general retort to the fairness argument. So, if the bottom pays close to the right amount and the top pays too much, U SPEND TOO MUCH MONEY!

LINK This is from the Heritage foundation. I believe Hannity likes to quote these figures. I was wrong about how much the top ten percent pay, it is about 70% of all taxes. This is IRS data. Data! Not I believe, data. These numbers are often given from both sides to support their arguments. We spend TOO much money. We don't have major revenue problems past a weak economy with not enough jobs.

A rising tide lifts all boats - John F. Kennedy. The focus should not be on the gap, but on the economic opportunities each person has. The gap is largely symbolic in nature and doesn't amount to much.

To be clear I speak of income tax, which is what I figure we are talking about. The chart includes all income including cap gains, but not payroll taxes. Poor people do pay those.
