I have to admit that could very well be the best acting performance that I have ever seen on screen and yes I am counting anything DDL has done (since he is praised and worshiped on this board - and deserving so). Not to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it, but that processing scene and the jail house scene were absolutely incredible. Hoffman was great as well and deserving of a supporting actor nomination for sure, but Joaquin Phoenix just took it to another level.

I should also note that I saw the film last night so I have had time to process (no pun intended) it.

Phoenix is and was the clear lead actor. Hoffman was the supporting actor.

I think Cristoph Waltz got snubbed on a technicality like this...

He was the clear lead in Inglorious Basterds to me, yet he was on the supporting actor list.

I've already read numerous reports though that Phoenix will be for the lead and they are pushing for Hoffman to get a supporting nomination. as that is how it should be. not only did Phoenix have more film time, and not only was the film based around him, but he is one of the very few (possibly the only that I have seen) out act Hoffman while sharing the screen with him. both were incredible, but again - Phoenix took it to another level.

He's gonna have stiff competition from Daniel Day-Lewis. I think The Master will suffer this Oscar season for coming out too early.

personally I think that Lincoln is going to be one of those films like a Gangs of New York or Curious Case of Benjamin Button where it will receive nominations for nearly every category, but win very few. I think Daniel Day-Lewis is a safe bet for a nomination, but I don't see him winning again for this.

Lincoln is gonna be about freeing the blacks, which Hollywood loves. The Master has the perception that its about scientology, which will cost it some votes. Lincoln just looks like pure Oscar bait.

The difference though is that the reviews for Gangs of New York and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were very lukewarm, whereas, if you read the reviews for Lincoln, many of the critics are saying that this is Spielberg's best film in years.

as did Gangs of NY and Curious Case of BB both of which combined were nominated for nearly every category (23 nominations total) and only won 3 of them. all three of the wins in the art/makeup/visual.

Lincoln could very well win a ton I mean who really knows, but I just don't see it happening. If anything that Les Misrebales will likely win for best picture and director.

I don't know. It seems like Lincoln is going to go the way of War Horse. Overly sentimental contrived purpose that's supposed to garner some type of emotion.

I mean, that's why the film is made, but I don't know if I can deal with that knowing that.

Schindler's List was wayyy different because you were brought to the lowest of lows and the shining light was the sentimental stuff that brought you out of the depths.

Not to say that slavery wasn't bad or bad enough. Just that this film could either be on the good side of the spectrum Glory/The Color Purple or the other side The Help.

ETA Don't know how that will affect the acting and the Oscar chances.

that would be downright silly though and equivalent to them moving DDL to best supporting actor in Lincoln lol. Phoenix is the clear lead and will get nominated in there. Also they would likely have to snub Hoffman for supporting actor if they did that because who would have been the lead in The Master if both of them are listed as supporting? lol

The reviews say just the opposite. Yeah, Spielberg has some sentimental stuff in this movie. You're gonna get that because it's Spielberg. But it is not as prevalent in this film as it is in most of his films.

Also...this is an ensemble film that is basically a who's who of character actors and A-listers from the ranks of film and television. It's an actor's movie and, if you know anything about the Academy, the Academy's main voting bloc are actors.

People like to blame the old, conservative vote for keeping Brokeback Mountain from winning Best Picture but, in actuality, it was the actors who pushed Crash over the top. That was an ensemble piece and, anytime a movie like that is nominated for Best Picture, you had better watch out.

I'm not saying Lincoln should be considered a frontrunner but don't count it out because of your preconceived notions about the film. I have read just about every review that has been released thus far and it isn't your typical Spielberg fair and it is most definitely NOT a War Horse-type movie.
