I'm currently learning mandarin and have decided to try to watch a chinese movie at least once/ week. What are some good ones (preferably on instant)?
Also, I just saw please vote for me, a documentary that follows a grade school election in china. Pretty good film

That should get you started at least. Most good old Chinese films are in Cantonese due to Hong Kong having control over the industry longer than China itself has.
But good luck with Mandarin. Its a very difficult and frustrating language to learn, and it takes many years to become fluent. Even I can't say that I've reached complete fluency yet, and I've been studying this language for almost 4 years now. Just be patient with it, since it will pay off in spades if you keep at it.

No, just thought I'd try to help.
I have had working conversations in English with some Chinese media guys that used to come over to cover Yao Ming when the Rockets made the NBA playoffs. They told me they were from the Chinese version of ESPN and gave me a silk purse.
Also sat next to the corespondent for the Chinese version of Time magazine when Wang Zhizhi came over to play in the NBA. He was the first of the Chinese soldiers to come over and play. This event was days after the U.S. spy plane had crashed in China (2001). At that time the crew was still in the custody of the Chinese. Media members were told Mr. Wang would not discuss the incident.

What Women Want (2011?) Chinese version of Gibson's movie.
Netflix is so great for foreign films and then recommending more.

Thanks, you guys. I appreciate all the recommendations and sources.
I'm kinda tired of martial arts movies (not a huge fan) so I'll be watching the dramas and comedies
I watched Little Big Soldier last week as well. Has Jackie Chan and its not that good. I think they were speaking either Cantonese or some specific dialect that i dont know. only made out a few words where i can usually recognize much more

That is exactly what I figured. Martial arts and stuff like war with asian movies could very well get played out quickly in a short amount of time. That's why I don't mind drama/romance/comedy.
I had other Asian movies featuring Sports, but not in Mandarin.
If you find something good let me know. I am always into watching foreign films on netflix.

Yeah! I have read incredible reviews on Vote For Me. I'll check that out tonight.
Also, I've seen that Aftershock movie rated top 3 of all foreign films to check out on Netflix before.. I just didn't know it was Mandarin. So i'll check both these out. Qued up.
