| If Romey had pledged to repeal the Patriot Act, other govt. intrusions. (Posted on 11/7/12 at 5:37 pm)
This would have been something concrete he could have done to show he was serious about limiting government. Difference maker? ETA: include onerous copyright/IP regulations in this.

Quite possibly IF he had forced the issue with obama. If he had forced Obama to explain his gigantic flip flop on NDAA/Patriot act it could have helped to paint Obama as what he really is. Bush.

Obama is not nearly as liberal as he is painted. Secret Drone strikes, patriot act, NDAA, these things romney could have hammered obama on but he agrees with all of them so here we are.

No. Obama is a rock star, a celebrity. He's on the cover of US weekly with "15 things you didn't know about me." Folks with no concern for the country or for future generations will vote for the celebrity because he's cool, for the candidate they "like" instead of the candidate the country needs. Others will vote for the one who will "gimme mine" and will assume what should be their personal responsibilities from cradle to grave. It is what it is.

Yep. Obama is basically bush on steroids. Too bad Obama and Romney are are both Bush.

how many of the 51% who voted for Obama would be won over with the promise of limiting government.

When you put it in the terms of the OP, it would probably have attracted some of the millenials, especially if he made an issue of the draconian copyright laws and download prosecutions.

This. Romney had plenty of easy openings to crush Obama on this front. Too bad he supports these positions.

1) Neither candidate wants to reduce the power of government 2) Voters in this election were not concerned about actual issues. This would have done nothing for either candidate.

Might not have gained votes for Romney, but I'd love to see Obama explain his way out of expanding the patriot act.

Obama still would have won. His believers would have justified it. This election had nothing to do with policy and everything to do with "winning."

Romney supported the Patriot act AND the NDAA. "... and if it means we have to go into a mosque, to wire tap.. or a church, then exactly that's where we are going to go. Because we're going to do whatever it takes to protect the American people. And I hear from time to time.. people say 'hey wait a second, we have civil liberties to worry about'... but don't forget, the most important civil liberty I expect from my government is my right to be kept alive" - Mitt Romney on giving up your individual liberties and freedom so that the almighty Government can protect you from the bogeyman.
