Had a guy just give me an Bushmaster AR-15 as partial payment on a debt. I want to put a little tactical scope on it, but not sure what brand or anything for these type of guns. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Depends on the usual variables:

What are you planning on shooting?
What's the budget?

ETA: If money isn't an issue, I'd start here: Trijicon ACOG

Would like to do a little close quarter deer hunting with it. Other than that just varmints. Would like to stay between $200-400 if I can get something relatively good at that price.

Get a decent red dot or holographic. Plenty of EOTechs in your price range.

No problem. Try this. That way your new AR is now also set up for home defense.

Can't go wrong with this. However, my friend just kept irons on his AR-15 and he uses his for deer hunting. He side mounted a red dot sight and a tact light for home defense. It's pretty sweet if you wanted to go that route.

Is it just me that thinks an AR is not a very good home defense round?

Big, bulky, long, and hot rounds passing straight through everything including people and sheet rock

The military uses the steel penetration round when knocking on doors and it has kilt plenty of taliban in the last decade. And those people are about half the size of an anorexic American teenage girl.

Depending on if you want a red dot or a real scope, there are a few options.

The Aimpoints, and EOtechs people suggest are WAY out of the 200-400 range. They are closer to 600 dollars.

If you want a decent midrange scope, I have a Redfield Revolution on my AR and it serves the purpose great. Shoots 1/2" groups all day.

Lol did you really just compare a home defense situation with killin terrorists in the Middle East?

In Mogadishu in 93' many ranger complained of 5.56 rounds passing straight through Somalis without them even realizing it and were envious of the 7.62 rounds that were putting their own guys down.

Village warfare in the mountains of Afghanistan is not the same as defending my condo off of Burbank, sorry.

Well, as I have personally seen a couple of M-4's take out a house full of dumbasses when the guys in green go into a suspected bomb makers house, yeah I can't compare it to shooting someone in your own home.

ETA: And the guys in Mogodishu that were getting shot were hopped on a drug 5 times more potent than meth. They could have had a cinder block fall on their heads on they wouldn't have known.
