And, since the WH says "no comment," then NBC comes to the conclusion that they also have "no comment" and it therefore isn't a news story.

If you read what he said he makes a pretty good case on why they didn't immediately believe that one "open source" e-mail about something that was posted on Facebook...
I'm in the camp that the situation should have been handled differently...but...seriously just read it.
