I saw this performace at Arena Stage in D.C. on Saturday and it was great. The woman who played Janis did a remarkable job. The woman who played "The Blues Singer" was amazing.

Hard to believe that Janis has been dead for over 40 years and died so young as a result of an overdose. She had a hell of a voice.

If this play comes to a theatre near you, see it.

My grandfather died when I was very young so I don't know all that much about him but he ate a filet mignon for dinner and listened to Janis every single night. yea I know :csb:

So, for whatever reason, Janis Joplin is the ultimate icon imo.. Girl was ugly as sin but could blow you away with her voice. She lived how she wanted to live and didn't apologize, I wish I could be as "free" as she was.

...and dead at 27. I remember my cousin gave my brother the JJ "Pearl" cassette for his 16th birthday in 1971. Too bad she didn't give him the LP. Cassettes usually died a slow, painful death.

It is sad when young one give away their lives to drugs and such. There's no telling what the future held for her...as well as many like her. It should be a great lesson to young ones today as a demonstration of the evil of drugs and what they can do to ruin one's life.

My old boss went to high school with her in Port Arthur. She was a little bit older than him but she graduated with his older brother. He pretty much said she was a little different from everybody way back then too. Wore paint stained clothes and was way over-the-top free spirited for someone in the blue collar town of Port Arthur in the late 50's. She was pretty much labeled a weirdo and was an outcast. He said he was surprised when she hit it big but wasn't surprised about her outlandishness and drug habits.

I know, CSB.

I don't know if I have a favorite song of hers. I like putting her on listening to an entire album. Kozmic Blues is my probably my favorite.

My Uncle told me stories of her also. They used to go to some little blues joint across the border in Louisiana and see her. He too said she was really different.

I'm not sure if this show is the same one I saw. Sister and I went and saw one that was based on letters she wrote to her family...it was really good.

Ball and Chain at the Monterey Pop Festival...amazing.

Check out Mama Cass Elliott of the Mamas and Papas sitting in the front row in awe--around the second half of the song.

JJ could sing the blues and I was impressed with the woman who portrayed her in the show. During the show I found myself with my mouth wide open ala Mama Cass.

Here's another of JJ's:

Never got into Janis. Just didn't like the tone and too much screaming for my tastes.
