I have an itch to get an elk this winter. I really just want the meat and the experience of the hunt. So no bull, I plan on just shooting a cow. I understand out of state permits are difficult to get without a licensed guide/lodge.

Any suggestions, advice, or experiences? Price is not a huge deterrent, but no Beretta Trident Lodges.

Also as far as rifle, I have a 7mm Winchester model 70 with a Zeiss scope. I have heard this is ideal for Elk.

TIA

I am going to NM at Thanksgiving to get a cow. This is my first trip.

My FIL has gone to NM almost every year for the last 10 years. He has gone to Co in the past but he prefers NM.

I have no idea if this is a good place or a good price, but I came across it the other day and remembered it when I saw your post...

Yeah I know. Ill get a nice bull one day but I just went on sabbatical leave from work to go back to school for an advanced degree, so i have to watch my spending.

How difficult is it for a non-resident go get a nice bull on public property?

I'm new to the world of Elk hunting so forgive any ignorance.

His main reasons are cost and distance to Louisiana.

I've hunted public land in CO several times. CO is the only state that has "Over the counter" rifle tags for bulls. Not sure about OTC tags for cows though, as I've always bought a bull tag. You can also look into landowner tags in CO and NM. OTC tags in CO are for the 2nd and 3rd rifle season in late Oct- early Nov.

If I remember correctly, the success rate on public land bulls is about 10%, but I had a chance on a legal bull my first three years.

I killed a 4x5 bull on my first trip- no "trophy" but i did it my self-

Public land, OTC tag, Third rifle season.

Group i was with also killed two cows...

Its not hard. Go to the Colorado dept of Wildlife website and start reading. there are also several other online resources-

Ususally you need to plan these things a year in advance, but i guess you could still get out there...

Where in NM are you going and where does your FIL go? My parents just bought a house up in Angel Fire and my brother and I are going to look into doing this next year.

There are zones in Colorado that have over the counter tags available. It is not hard to get tags - it is hard to get tags in "hotter" areas though.

For those that have "done it themself" please tell me what you had to do. Tents for camping or what? How much was the over the counter tag? And is that the only expense as far as the hunt its self goes. Not counting any travel and supplies etc

Kinda drunk now, I'll answer you in the a.m. Lots cheaper than guided private land hunting.

We go to a ranch just outside of Angel Fire.
