| Can someone tell me about Algiers? (Posted on 10/9/12 at 3:09 pm)
For the first time ever in search of potable water, I ventured into Algiers. And while 90% was a flaming dump of humanity, the Algiers Point area was/could be kind of cool. I saw a sign that said it was a "Best Kept Secret," while not entirely true, I saw some potential. So, WTF is going on over there and what's the deal? Seems it could easily have the charm of some of those small port towns I've been up in the northeast if it wasn't a giant hellhole on the way to it.

Let me know if they set up road blocks made of burning tires preventing your egress.

It had that sort of vibe. I was worried a bit. THe point was also eerily quiet like I was in one of those horror movies similar to House of Wax where everything looks OK but really you are about to be eaten.

algiers is one of the best places in the city. much like the rest of nola, there are shitty parts, most of those reserved for under the bridge/ near the projects. if you go down about 2 miles its nice suburban areas. lived my whole life there in aurora area. also Algiers Point is the second oldest part of the city next to the quarter.

Ya, I thought it had the "Quarter run-off" feel to it. As if the quarter went south across the river early on in city history. Just appeared that it could be a whole lot more over there than what is there, as least from what I saw.

too much garbage around the point. the point itself is awesome. nice little bars, a few good places to eat etc. when you go further down de gaulle it gets much nicer.

It's an easy commute on the ferry from the Point to the foot of Canal Street.

It is nice. You know the street between the other street, from the corner to the third house. Everything in between is nice. So prety much just those three houses. Hope you don't get murdered 318 Eliza Street seems to be ok, but you might get shot hanging around there at night

Algiers point is pretty cool. It's like a "mini" version of downtown New Orleans and has a lot of bars you can just walk to from your home, if you live there.

I lived in the Point for 4 years and I absolutely loved it. Very charming and the people are so friendly. I was within walking distance to 4 bars. I could hear live music every night of the week. My dog could go in all of the bars. I could hop on the ferry to go to festivals and to the quarter without worrying about driving or parking. Then my landlord sold the house I was in and I couldn't find another rental in time. Now I'm in Lakeview and I hate it. No character at all.

Yeah a friend lived in the point, was nice. I grew up in Algiers a couple miles down from the West Bank expressway on de Gaulle. Really nice quiet areas mostly suburbs.

Can only get there by airboat. Poor basketball facilities, but rims will never break. Poor schools.

Yea, but that's no problem for Coach Bell. He'll even go check out the church while he's down there. Maybe clap off beat for a few songs.

I referenced "Blue Chips" to my GF (no pics) who was with me. I had to give the whole rundown of how shitty Algiers was in that movie. "ALGIEEEEEEEEEEEEERS?"
