Why is it -1 for field goals attempted instead of field goals missed?

Because it evens out if they make the FG b/c you get +1 for a make. All it does it penalize -1 for a missed FG.

But wouldn't 5 of 10 be equal to 15 of 20? Both -5. What am I missing?

Yea, there is no benefit to made FGs. There is a penalty to missed FGs. The way a made FG helps is you get points for the actual points scored on the made shot. It keeps it to where there is no double dipping in getting extra points for a made shot, then getting the actual points for the amount the basket was worth

Ok. There it is. Thanks....so even though the guy taking more shots with the sAme percentage loses more points in the field goal department, he will have a higher score because of the points scored, all else held constant. But just somewhat higher. The field goal attempt penalty keeps it in check.
