| Film Industry Welfare now over $1billion in Louisiana- (Posted on 9/28/12 at 8:13 am)
These out of control tax credits cost Louisiana tax payers over $231 million this past year alone. We have given, cash money, now over a billion dollars to film makers. This corporate welfare cost Louisiana tax payers over $231 million this past year alone. LINK It is a waste of money that will never return to the state what the state has taken from us to give these people. It is time for the subsidies to end.

I agree completely. Once we remove the tax credits these production companies will move on to the next state. I'm for temporary tax breaks to attract new industry and manufacturing but the movie thing is ooc!

So if zero movies were made in louisiana, the state would have a billion more dollars? Is that what you are saying?

Yeah. We don't need them there talking picture shows in Louisiana... I never thought, i'd see the day, when someone would think attracting a new industry into a state, and having a budget surplus, during an economic downturn countrywide, would be considered a bad thing.

but what about the positives it brings? (i'm not stating these as facts just thinking to myself out lound...could be completely wrong) -it brings a lot of jobs to the area.. -it gives a lot of exposure to the state (all the TV shows being based, and the scenes of the state in movies) - brings in large crews and actors who stay in the area for long periods of time, spending money in the local economy... what else ETA: I understand why you feel this way, but is that "cost" how much it is after all of the jobs and benefits are added in...

what else
Tourism is OOC nowadays. And its directly related to film exposure to the state. Hell, New Orleans is now the #2 destination wedding location in the united states, behind Vegas. But this is all bad. Money bad, debt good....

So we attract a new industry to spend money here by offering tax incentives and you think it cost the state money?!?!?! How much tax did we make off the hotel rooms these people stayed in while making the movies? How much tax did we make off the meals these people ate while here? HOW MUCH INCOME TAX DID WE MAKE OFF THE PEOPLE THEY EMPLOY LOCALLY WHILE MAKING MOVIES?!?!?! Get a clue on how these incentives work before posting.

The problem is that most of these jobs are not permanent, long term jobs. I would much rather use those tax credits to attract industry that will stay once the credits end.

I can't speak for Louisiana's case, but in general, i agree these things need to go or at the very least used for industries that'll bring more return over the long term.

They didn't. I don't think Freeman thought this thread through when he started it. Liberals (and idiots) tend to think a tax credit, is a tax increase. Just like the liberals think tax cuts are spending increases. Flawed logic. This is basically a wannabe blame Jindal thread that backfired.

Just so I'm clear, the "welfare" is just telling a company that normally wouldn't work in LA they don't have to pay as much taxes if the come here to spend their money and hire people, right? So the $231M figure is an amount the industry would have paid if they did decide to come here and work under previous tax laws? So it's pretty reasonable to assume they wouldn't have come here without the new tax laws and LA would have higher unemployment and smaller GDP? And is that what you are advocating in the name of "fairness?"

It's one of the few things the government can do to spur the economy, but it begs the question, why are we taxing business in the first place?

exactly. if it is just a tax break, as in the film companies aren't paying the same rate of taxes as a normal business would in the state...then I dont see how it is "costing" us money since they wouldn't even be here in the first place if it wasn't for those tax incentives ETA: I see a couple people above me have said the same thing

I would really like to see where you got this information. In a round about way I work in the wedding industry (planning software) and have been trying to find any recent data on destination weddings.

I think he is saying that the tax payers of Louisiana had to shell a billion more in taxes. I want him to explain how.
