This is really fun read, surprising since it's from ESPN. I think this is pretty spot on from how the game has really developed interest too. I've played and been a soccer fan since birth, but alot of my friends have come to be serious fans through FIFA. I love that a video game can be the driving force of sporting revolution in the states. It's only a matter of time before it overtakes the NFL IMO, especially with all the bullshite from these replacement referees.

quote:

Back on the Upper East Side, Scarborough and Lovelady are living proof of its impact. "This game destroys everything an average American has been taught to feel about soccer," says Scarborough. "It made me realize the power of netting a single goal, which feels like scoring 12 touchdowns simultaneously."

This is the complete truth for me. I grew up playing soccer until I was 13. I broke my shoulder playing and it cost me my baseball season. So, I basically shunned the sport after that. Then, I got a 360 the summer of the 06 World Cup. A friend told me that I had to get FIFA World Cup, and I wouldn't regret it. I did, got hooked, then got hooked on recognizing guys in the actual World Cup. I have been hooked on soccer ever since.

FIFA didn't make me fall in love with soccer, but it has made learning players and clubs from all over the world a whole lot easier for me.

Only video game franchise that I will buy every single year.

+1

Always knew the big clubs fairly well watching the Champions League and such. Now I have a grasp of the top Euro leagues and players because of the game. I always run a manager mode with a newly promoted EPL team simply to learn the players so now it's fun to watch Norwich, for example.
