Buying an ATV without title....super-terrible idea?

I found a good deal on a bike, low hours, powerful, kept up well. Dude purchased it second hand and doesn't have the title.
I'm thinking, at minimum, I couldn't get it insured. What are the other pitfalls? No registration?

Run the numbers thru the local PD. Could be stolen. Do not support crackheads.
If clear, you might be able to get a title along with having to pay taxes.

No insurance, won't ever be able to trade it in. Alot of times it depends on the circumstances. If it's a 20 year old Honda 300 then odds are it won't really matter. If it's a fairly new bike then odds are it was sold while the previous owner still had a bank lien on it. Odds are he quit paying, took a bump on his credit, and some bank is out looking for it. frick that nonsense.

like I said, run the numbers. If stolen, you will be helping someone out big time. Just might have a reward out for it too!

If he has a bill of sale, have him request a duplicate title.
ETA I would still do this as well:

Possession of stolen goods? Getting shot by the person who they stole it from? Having it seized and you don't get your money back?

Bad idea.
Just for fun though. Tell him you want to buy it and that you want to meet in the parking lot of the police station for the transaction. See how he responds.

The stupidity in the thread is rampant. Like someone said, it doesn't mean it's stolen. All you have to do is run the numbers to see. You know the disadvantages. I would rather a good deal on one without personally because I have no use for the title.

Now if the numbers are gone... Stolen.

The only stupidity is not getting verifyed as to whether or not its stolen...let someone steal yours and see how you like it!

What in the world would you need a title on a 4 wheeler for? I have bought and sold many a 4 wheeler without a title. Just make sure the thing isnt stolen. Thats all.

Could have purchased out of state to avoid sales tax and never registered with the state. ( I.e. no title)

That's what I did today, 2011 Rancher 4x; from a dealer in Arky with free shipping.
