Just finished watching this powerful film. i cant really express my feeling on the film after just watching it. i will say it is a very dense movie to take in at once with a lot of complexities tied into it. the entire story was beautifully crafted.

i dont think i can ever write that paragraph about a spike lee movie. that is what really worries me about the american remake. recently, american remakes have strived (and succeeded) in remaking foreign films, im thinking of let the right one in and dragon tattoo (ive seen both original and remakes). but can spike lee do the same?

i feel this movie will have a lot changed for american audiences. i really hope im proven completely wrong by spike for once.

since a few months. comes out next year. has most of the cast done. from what ive put together sam jackson is woo-jin, which sounds terrible. i like josh brolin as the main though.

I'm not a fan of Lee's politics, but I absolutely think he COULD if given free reign by the studio.

Exactly. I can't think of a major studio keeping the same main plot twist. Regardless, I have no interest in seeing right now. If it is very well reviewed and he makes some interesting changes, I
may check it out on Netflix or something.

Now go watch Lady Vengeance. It's pretty different. Comparing them to US movies, I'd say Oldboy is "Taken" and Lady Vengneance is more akin to "Fargo".

hahaha wow. how in the world can those fall into the same category at all? i mean that the same guy could make two movies that fall into a "trilogy" that are fargo and taken. very interesting.

i agree with the taken analogy except with a twist of either anti-christ or something else perverse (law and order: svu?).

No chance the American remake is any good.

It may not be the best comparison (and, now that I think about it, Fargo would be a very legit comparison to Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance). The point I'm trying to make is that the other two movies are more intensity/dialogue driven, with the violence being less frequent than in Oldboy. There's nothing like the corridor scene/end battle in the other two.

I read an interview of Lee talking about this remake. He said that he is taking both from the original manga ( I think that's what it's called) and Park's Oldboy. I don't really have much hope that it will be as good as the original. However the first time I read about this movie was like 3 years ago with Will Smith as the lead. If that had gone into production, I would have lost the little faith I have in American cinema.

And Spike Lee directing. No thanks. What a joke. Hollywood ain't got shite. And these are the people who fancy themselves to be the elites of the world. Just a bunch of vapid idiots who can suck a mean dick at a Hollywood coke party but can't create anything.

I will happily die never having seen this piece of shite.

i guess cuz his name sells.. not sure.. but brolin should do this movie some sort of justice. i hope so at least. i'm not writing it off.

i believe they got the new olsen girl in this as well right? she's definitely on the rise.

Hardcore bro, hardcore.

Not gonna lie, I like the way Spike Lee directs a movie, dig his flourishes. 25th Hour is a favorite, had a great time with Inside Man. Even liked He Got Game. It's not like Old Boy is deep or anything, it's a revenge flick with a fricked up twist, and some typically weird Asian violence and weirdness. I'm interested to see how it gets played for "us." They did a great job with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, don't see why that can't be duplicated.

I say yes. I think Spike really does a great job of forming a connection between the viewers and the characters. Do the Right Thing, Crooklyn, and He Got Game are prime examples of this.

I think Spike is gonna take the viewers on one hell of an emotional roller coaster in this movie.

Good point, that movie had that one particular scene which is on the level of anything Oldboy had, maybe even more haunting given that it was far more plausible.

No doubt, Fincher may be my favorite director. But if you look past the themes of his films (assuming that you don't like them), Lee is very talented. He wouldn't be my first choice to remake this movie (if it has to be done, it has Tarentino written all over it), but he's certainly capable.
