Cupcakes tend to make you fat and lazy.

Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday soon too many sugary desserts are going to lead to unplanned and unwanted problems, including but not limited to lethargy and a lack of focus.

The Washington Huskies didn't think of themselves as bite-sized pastries, but few teams do. After all, the Huskies have a very good quarterback in Keith Price who threw for 3,063 yards last year and 222 in Washington's opener this season against San Diego State.

But for the Tigers of LSU, the 41-3 rout of the Huskies in Baton Rouge, which could have been as bad as Les Miles wanted it to be, was a fluffy confection with icing and sprinkles on top.

And while Tiger fans were thrilled by what they saw at home Saturday night, that sort of diet is eventually going to cause problems.

The win last week over North Texas did nothing but dust off the summer cobwebs for LSU. This win did even less.

In fact, beating up on a clearly inferior opponent might have hurt them. By making Zach Mettenberger look like Aaron Rodgers, the win has the potential to lull the No.3 team in the nation into a sense of complacency, providing the kind of false confidence that comes with beating up on a weakling.

Granted Mettenberger looked better than he ever has. He was 12-for-18 for 195 yards, which doesn't sound like much with all the one-back, pro-set, pass-happy offenses in today's college game. But for a Les Miles team, this was an air war.

The quarterback's game was better than the numbers. Five of Mettenberger's six incompletions were perfect passes dropped by receivers, one hitting a receiver in the chest in the end zone.

Mettenberger also did something far more important than throw a perfect game: He led the offense. The rhythm was virtually flawless, and the quarterback read defenses, made the right adjustments, found his check-down receivers and seemed generally in command from the first possession until he took a seat on the sideline in the fourth quarter once the game was well in hand.

The running game was balanced and effective as well. Alfred Blue picked up 101 yards on 14 carries, and Michael Ford, Kenny Hilliard and Spencer Ware also had solid nights.

But that, again, is a problem. You can run through gaping holes, picking up 10-, 11-, 12 yards per carry against an inferior defense.

You can get away with dropping passes that hit you in the numbers against teams like Washington and North Texas, or in coming weeks against Idaho, and Towson, and even against a hapless Auburn squad that is 0-2 after falling to Clemson and Mississippi State.

But beginning in October, the Tigers face Florida, South Carolina and Texas A&M in consecutive weeks. Then, after a week of rest, they get Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Arkansas.

Those are red meat games, games that require leanness and a hunger that you don't get by feasting off the fat of the weak.

Miles and Mettenberger and the rest of the Tigers should get through September undefeated. The question is: will they get through it healthy and focused.

Too many cupcakes make you fat and slow. And fat and slow will eventually get you beat, especially when you play in the SEC.

Sorry ever year can't be like 2011, when we played one of the most brutal schedules in the BCS-era. Christ, U-dub was nearly a top 30 team. WTF do they want frm us?

That's what you call seeking far and wide for the negative. What about last year with our extremely tough schedule. I like where we are and who we play thus far. Mett needs confidence sky high. BTW....the last four years (with the exception of last year)we didn't always blow out lesser competition and QB play was unpredictable at best.

Eubanks better stick to Golf..

LSU practices daily against premier LSU Athletes..you know that team with two titles in in a recent four year window, and just went unbeaten for it's first 12-0 regular season campaign, playing in the BCSCG for the 3rd time in 9 seasons..

I trust LSU's Ath Dept full of lifer LSU Sports guys, and their expertise in knowing what LSU Sports needs..I say give CLM the schedule he wants..not the one some media and/or some LSU Tix holders crave.

I guess this Eubanks cat missed the Oregon & WVU games played outside La last year? UDub normally a quality team..I guess LSU's braintrust are Nostradamus to have known the Huskies would be so pedestrian in 2012 back when they scheduled the H&A.

Eubanks clearly doesn't understand the SEC grinder losses that oft are aided and abetted via 'Win By Assist', where upon you survive one week vs a superior opponent, yet lose to an inferior one the very next week..often also aided and abetted by an needlessly overly ambitious and taxing OOC schedule.

What part of 6 straight SEC Champ = BCSCG Champ, and 9 of the last 16, with the lone loss being SEC vs SEC, doesn't he understand?
