I am a huge Astros fan, so naturally havent been following baseball extremely close the last month or so...especially since football has started

Last I remember I saw phillies being awful and being the biggest bust in baseball. I'm at a pub and just saw that they're 3.5 games out of the wildcard while watching ESPN

Do they have a remote chance of actually making the playoffs?

They have like a 5% chance or something like that.

Despite their loss to the Astros tonight, obviously they have a decent chance of getting that second wild card.

If by decent you mean ~ 5% then yeah. They have 5 teams ahead of them.

They're 3.5 out of a wild card spot behind plummeting St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. They could easily get in.

They dumped Victorino and Blanton on the Dodgers. Since then, Dodgers have sucked and Phillies are kickin arse. Well, The Red Sox dumped a bunch of dead weight on the Dodgers too.

I'm just giving you the odds and refuted you when they had a decent chance.

No hard feelings.

Brew Crew was at 4% when I checked this morning, so yeah, about that.

The only reason I don't think the Brewers can make it is a 7 game road stretch against the Nats and Reds. I haven't looked at the Phillies schedule.

It's actually a 3% chance.

3 vs Braves, 6 vs Nats to end the year.

This is why I don't think the Phils make it.

My friend told me yesterday the Philles were in the wild card race and I told him man they are like 15 games out then he showed me they were just a few out and it blew my mind.

They aren't catching the Braves for the WC, so they are fighting with 4 teams ahead of them for 1 spot.

It's not that hard to see why they have a very poor chance.

What are you trying to argue? That 3 is a very low number?

I think everyone gets that, but 3.5 games isn't insurmountable. I'd like to see what the Braves and Red Sox % was last year on September 1st.

I'm just saying that fighting with 4 other teams for one spot isn't usually a good thing.

They aren't going to make it.

So pretty much just bet the house on the Phillies

I think you are really dumb for saying this.

Anyone that follows baseball knows it's all about who is hot at the right time.

The Phillies are on fire right now, while the Cardinals, Dodgers, and Pirates are beyond sucking.

Their 15-4 record since Aug. 23 is the best in the National League and they are 21-8 in their last 29 home games.

Milwaukee is 7-3 in their last 10.

And there are other teams between them.

It makes it much more difficult when you have a bunch of teams between you and the top, they all have to tank. They are 3.5 out with 18 to go, and 4 teams to leap.

That could all change in 5 games sure, but at least one of the teams ahead of them is going to start winning.

Sure, but Milwaukee doesn't have Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, and Cliff Lee either.

Lot of experience to carry the Phillies.

They had won 7 in a row before today I believe.

The Cardinals, Dodgers, and Pirates aren't going to go on some streak and seal the #2 Wild Card, they just aren't good enough. It will be a race to the final day.

Here is the thing, St. Louis and LAD have to keep losing at this pace and Philly has to keep winning at this pace. If St. Louis and LAD play a little over .500 ball from this point forward, the Phillies would have to win at an extremely high percentage.

Is it doable? Definitely. Is it probable? More than likely not.
