5 rescued after boat hits jetty

Five fishermen have been rescued by the Coast Guard and group of good Samaritans after their boat struck a jetty at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The Coast Guard says all five men were wearing lifejackets and didn't sustain any injuries in the collision early Saturday morning.

The crew of a 40-foot pilot boat arrived at the scene and brought the men aboard their boat before a Coast Guard helicopter responded to a distress call.

The rescued men had boarded a raft after their 65-foot vessel started taking on water.

The Coast Guard was investigating the cause of the incident.

I saw one do this at Southpass about 10 years ago. The boat, about a 50' sportsfisher went down in about 15 mins. Had to pull the crew aboard. Dudes were from Fla and had never ran the river.

I watched a 65 viking run aground in south pass last year for the Cajun canyons. I couldn't imagine seeing something that size hit the jettys!

I talked to cousin of mine who works for the pilots at southwest pass and he said it was a commercial longline boat (5 Vietnamese fisherman) and the boat sunk and some of it is still stuck on the rocks/jetties.

Yea, they have so many of them left in the gulf...

The commercial fishing industry in the gulf is all but shut down. No more excuses for people now on why they can't catch fish.

That is surprising. Despite the Vietnamese tradition of never coming up on the radio and generally ignoring all rules of the road, they don't seem to have too many allisions/collisions.
