They never poked Mike V. He hated Mike the mascot so they would just trot Mike the mascot by the cage and the real Mike would get riled up.

Hell yea. Not to long ago (70's - early 80's) before all the animal protection activists got politically correct on us...a male cheerleader or someone caring for Mike would poke him with a stick in his cage to really piss him off in front of the visiting locker room right as the players were entering the tunnel into the coliseum...I mean stadium. Knew a cheerleader back then who said you could see the whites in their eyes of pure terror. Wanted them to know how the poor Christian Gladiators had to feel at the Coliseum during the ancient Roman games. . A roaring Mike will make you piss in your pants...not kidding...scary as hell.

I mean really. He is 500lbs of muscle, sinew, teeth, and claws.
It would be cool if they could condition him to roar on cue for a treat or when shown a toy, or something like that.
