Has anyone ever duck hunted southfarm? I was thinking about putting in for a lottery hunt there but, know little about the process. My questions are about the hunting, are there blinds out there? Do you need a four wheeler or other transportation to get to them. Are you allowed to bring a dog? Basically, I want to know if its worht the trouble and if its an easy hunt or pain in the a**.

Any information would be great. Thanks

Yep.

No. Bring brush woven in a piece of hog wire or something...

They allow them, or will give you a ride if you don't have one.

Yeah.

If you don't get drawn, your other options have to be close. When we hunted it we killed good ducks (mallards, teal, greys, and a woodie or two). But we only got drawn twice on probably a dozen attempts. When we didn't get drawn we went and shot woodies in the other parts of Sherburne.

I have been at the drawing 10 times and have never been drawn. Always went to other parts of Sherburne and busted some woodies. I have made MANY amazing teal hunts over there. It is first come first serve during the teal season.

I've been there many times and only got drawn once. We killed 5 teal i think between 3 of us. Its kinda a pain but i heard hunting can be good there.

Even if you are selected on a lottery hunt you still enter a drawing, correct? I assume the drawing is for areas? IF you don't get drawn your just sol?

Well I might do it, we hunt lottie on the north border, but only get ducks towards the end of the second split. I guess if I dont get drawn I have plenty of time to head back up and go on the dog hunt. Just thought it would be fun to try it once.

My dad and I have applied the last 5 years and been drawn once between us... Then killed 4 ducks.

It seems to be set up nice but pretty hit or miss I think.

If you have a kid though, the youth hunts out there always do well. They hunt the north farm which at times holds more than 30000 ducks

No the Lottery pre registers you to hunt opening day of both splits.

Every other Thurs and Sat. I think they just draw the first 6 names from everyone who shows up at 4:30.

I may be wrong on the days and time, I haven't done it since 2004.

Hunted the lottery last season during the second split only time we went we got drawn we did ok but had to deal with heavy fog for about the first hour and a half...ended up with a few greys, a mallard, and i believe a teal and woody

will definitely try and go a few more times next year

I've deer hunted there plenty and never really saw a lot of ducks. I have seen some geese there though.

No.

You enter the lottery by submitting up to three applications pre-season to LDWF, each for a different date (all Saturdays btw).

If you get picked in the lottery it is for one, two, or all of the dates if you are so lucky.

On the date you get drawn for, you show up along with all the other winners for that date and then you draw numbered golf balls out a bucket to see what pond/area you will hunt. there are the same number of spots as lotttery winners.

The Tues/Thurs is different...if you dont get drawn you go home, but i have been at times when not enough people to fill al the spots have shown up...

You got about a mile hike from the check-in station. I wouldn't recommend it

Cyber scouting at it's best. Go scout and find a spot then come let me know where to hunt

it's a public draw... anyone who can find the LDWF website will find out about every public draw in the state.
Is what it is.

That's pretty much what I said with the exception of "Tuesday".

I didn't mean the lottery lets you hunt both opening days, I just meant you can win one, both, or all three whatever the third hunt may be.

i was really trying to provide a better ansewer to mako than you replied... i think he thought you could get picked in the lottery for a date, then not get drawn for a spot that day. which is not correct....if you get drawn in the actual lottery you are guaranteed a spot with two guests. you can apply for up to three of the nine total saturdays open in the whole season.

the tues/thurs deal is not really the "lottery" per se...

just trying to clarify...

Right. It's more of a "drawing"...

I see what you are saying though. The "lottery" is something you send in for ahead of time for Saturdays, win, and you're in. Tues/thurs "drawings" are held the morning of with no gaurantee...

Thanks, that does clear things up. I think I am going to ask for the later dates, hopefully more ducks will be down that time of year

I went on one of the Sherburne lottery hunts about 3 years ago. It wasn't what I expected at all. We showed up with guns, decoys, and a dog. Everyone else had truck loads of fast grass and 4 wheelers. They dropped us off in our field, told us not to sky bust, and said they would be back around 10 to pick us up. Normally, I wouldn't mind building a blind that morning but the only brush we could find was sticks. (which we hauled from the woods about 100 yards) Needless to say we didn't shoot much once the sun came up. Ended up with around 5 birds...

I've been about 4 times and we only didn't get drawn 1 time. IIRC, 3 men can hunt in a blind... If you bring 3 people your chances are better of getting picked. We hunted blind 9 once I think, I saw more green heads in one spot than I've ever seen in my entire life, and I've been duck hunting since I could walk. We didn't bring any brush though, so when that bluebird sky came out we stuck out pretty good with just the few pieces of bamboo that got left out there. We made out alright though.

ETA: The time we didn't get picked, we were back home in bed (in BR) with enough time to fall asleep before the sun came up.
