Needing a football fix while I try to wait for the season to start,I watched the replay.LSU's passing offense was similar to last year's and Mauck threw 3 int.s,one returned for six.And then I remembered how few times Mauck was allowed to throw in the NC game b/c of concerns about interceptions. The running game in 2003 wasn't near as good as 2011.

The D was also similar to 2011 and was bad to the bone.

Anyone else watch and compare to last years team?

Mauck had something like 4 TD's and 12 ints against ranked teams in 2003. He made his stats against unranked teams

D in 2011 far superior IMO to D in 2003.

2003 passing offense light years ahead of 2011 and against OU Mauck completed more passes than Jefferson attempted in most of his games.

you could be right and my comparison was based on this one game. 2003 did rank #1 in the nation in scoring D which in my humble opinion is the most important defensive stat.Of course you don't get that #1 ranking without pretty decent stats in most other defensive categories.

Where did the Tigers finish last year in scoring D?

Not me it was a bigger play defense that forced more turnovers. I think we were pretty much more athletic across the board with the linebackers being a wash. I would take Lionel Turner over ours last year but overall that wasn't our best position in 2003 either. And Laron was a freshman so he wasn't playing at his fullest capability.

I think last year was a bigger play defense. And I think our overall talent level last year was better.

Stats are pretty similar looking back. I had simply watched the game last night and made a statement but it's closer than I initially said. But I would pick more of the 2011 players for my time than 2003 players for whatever that is worth.

Mauck was awful. He would have fit right in last year...people forget that bc the defense and JV won him a ring

03 - 21 ints, 23 ff, 12 fr
11 - 18 ints, 29 ff, 12 fr

03 - 44 sacks, 105 TFLs
11 - 39 sacks, 106 TFLs

dude, go back and look at Eric Alexander's stat line. hell, Cam Vaughn's 03 was probably better than the '11 OLBs combined.

it's cool. Webster, Daniels, Hunt, Spears, Marquise, Alexander, Turner and Lav were.

I would have traded in a heart beat and would have loved to have his "mentality" or huddle presence, or whatever you want to call it the last couple years..

I went back and looked at the stats. I also believe the schedule and conference competition in 2011 was far better. I was there for both years. I know what I saw.

It was still the weakest position on that team IMO and on this team. I will give the 2003 team the edge though. I agree, I would take more of those linebackers than these. Alexander easily over Francois.

However, we also played a lot more nickel on this team with Ron Brooks and TM.

They were all good. But I would take Brockers, Mongtgomery, Mingo, Reid (wash with Landry), Claiborne, Taylor, and TM.

Did Mauck not set a record for single-season passing TD's that year?

He may have been the best utility QB to ever don the purple and gold.

I wouldn't say far superior, but damn they were good.

And a lot of fun to watch. Every opposing QB spent most of the game on his back or trying to avoid being there.

Sadly, the spread offense changed all that.

He was a liability against quality teams...
