Surface drive or mud boat/motor

The lease is mostly flats with silt/soft slop. We have one stretch that is hard bottom sand. We have to go through that stretch to get to the blinds. Think a surface drive or mud boat with 231 GM mud motor is better for that sand ?

I don't know much about either of these and hope we get some good feedback cause I've thought about getting a surface drive but have never so much as even ridden in a boat propelled by one.

I'd go with the mudboat, but you'd better be a mechanic. Those damned things never seem to run right for long. My 36hp prodrive can go through some thick soup, but not nearly as fast as a mudboat can.

co-sign on the mechanic part re: the mudboat...constant maintenance, loud, and it shakes like hell (which is why I think most mudboats can't stop breaking down).
and God forbid you high-center or vacuum one down tight in the silt...they're impossible to get unstuck with that block.
i'd go with the mud motor...about all you have to worry about with the sand is getting the prop reworked at some point.

Thanks. The spot with the hard packed sand has me worried. We may try to trench it

We've had to do the same thing, I put some PVC poles to mark the lane and ran it multiple times. Once it was established, tide and running it during course of season kept it open.

Can someone tell me what a ballpark price for a used 20-25hp longtail would be?
