So, Bohemian Rhapsody comes on the radio and gets me to thinking...

Is there another song in a movie that gained as much fame as this one from being in a movie?
Lorne Michaels or whoever owns the rights to Wayne's World should get royalties from that song.

Well there was this little ole record called "Rock Around The Clock" that flopped on its first release. It was put into a movie called Blackboard Jungle and when last heard from it had sold over 25 million copies...

Then it became the original theme song for the hit TV series "Happy Days" before it was replaced by that awful theme song.

I'm pretty sure people had heard of Bohemiam Rhapsody before Wayne's World.

Don't Stop Believing exploded after it was in the Sopranos series finale. That song is bigger now than it ever was in the 80's.

Yea this thread is pretty stupid but in his defense it introduced the song more into pop culture and to a younger crowd no doubt making it more popular than it ever had been previously.

so that's what's to blame for that fricking song being revived

Hell it inspired a Queen tribute concert on MTV.

Of course, but WW definitely made it popular again.
FWIW, I don't ever remember hearing it before WW.
Per Wiki, after the release of WW, the song went to #2 on the charts and also won Queen an MTV Video Music Award apparently. Also, the sountrack of the movie went #1 because of the popularity of this song.
I'd say that's a pretty solid bump in popularity for an entirely new generation of people.

Up Where We Belong with Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes was written for Officer and a Gentleman and blew up. Won some Academy Awards too.

Really? I'm not sure how to feel about that.

I think the OP means songs not written specifically for a movie or else everyone would just say the Titantic song would win.
I would think "I will always love you" from the Bodygaurd would be up there as well. Dolly Parton originally wrote and sung it but it wasn't until that movie and Whitney singing it that it became a huge hit.

I wasn't really into music too much when I was 12. I remember it being "that Wayne's World song." I knew it was an oder Queen song, but wasn't familiar with it before that movie.

I'm with Coc. Before WW I knew nothing of Bohemian Rhapsody and I listened to rock music.
