I know it's a terrible idea but, should I get a GPS watch? Are they really worth it? Anny suggestions as to which one to go with?

I use a garmin forerunner 110. Cheap and works. Also tracks all my training for me. I run trails that are not marked and I also ruck alot. I haven't had any issues with it. Good luck on your marathon.

I use a soleus I bought at academy. Doesn't do as much as the garmin but it's only $100 and it gets the job done.

I think for marathon training it is a must. I've run a few half marathons now and haven't bought one yet, but that's mostly because I am cheap. Well, that and I have Golden Gate Park to run in so I can track most of my runs.

OT board may have some good advice too.

I did one full and damn it sucked. My body was all kinds of messed up afterwards. Got chaffed real bad at around mile 19, entire lower body cramps started at 18. I've never experience those and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I finished and before I left the ball park (St. Jude in Memphis finished in the minor league stadium)and had to find a shitter because I had diarrhea.

Yeah, especially if you're going to try to run negative splits or want to maintain your pace. i run with a garmin 410 but the 110 is just fine.

Good luck! And I use a Garmin Forerunner 110 as well, gets the job done, definitely have enjoyed it so far.

Anyone who chooses to run that long is crazy.
Hell, anyone who does a half marathon is crazy.

Well I know I can run the PFT and do my 3miles in under 21 min. But I figured I'd challenge my self since my run is my weakest score

I've ran 10 so far and doubt seriously will run another - I'm 68 and don't have the time to train - now to the watch question - my first marathon was back in 94 - had a timex IronMan - the remaining ones I got a cheapo at Wallyworld - believe me at the 18 to 21 mile mark you ain't gonna be worried about a GPS - there will be plenty of time stuff to keep you informed - good luck. Of course you could be planning a 2:30 marathon - a GPS would be nice for that time.

Running 3 miles and running 26.2 miles aren't exactly the same thing.

if you wear nikes, their GPS watch isn't bad. GPS and also uses the sensor that goes in the nike + shoes.

Garmin's are really solid though. Once you knock out a marathon man the eff up and do an Iron Man!!!!!

I am planning on running a marathon this winter as well. I think I will get the Garmin 110.
P.S. I was an 0331.
