Any experts in here? I'm sick of LSU not having a team.

The sport is growing and Title IX is no excuse to deny local players the chance to stay close to home.

Anyone know Joe Alleva? We need a movement.

SIAP (search function sucks)

I've been saying this for years. Title lX is outdated and no longer needed. All it does now is limit collegiate sports, where its intention was to expand them (60 years ago).

The talent pool in Louisiana has grown substantially in the last 10 years and I know guys that would have played for LSU had they had the opportunity. We aren't on the level of Florida or some other east coast powerhouse states, but we could field a highly competitive team.

Good luck convincing anyone in power to take this stance. And I'm pretty sure it was ratified in the 70s...

Kentucky and South Carolina have figured it out...they just play footy in the C-USA.

It would have to be a SEC-sponsored sport for schools like LSU, Bama or Auburn for it to get picked up, I think.

I took the "History of Collegiate Athletics" class at LSU. If you can take it, do. It's a joke 4000 level history class for athletes.

In the class Joe Alleva came in for an "ask me anything" session. I asked him about Title IX and soccer. He seemed sympathetic but told me, in no uncertain terms, that there would never again be men's soccer in the SEC.

Also, Title IX killed a lot of wrestling programs, too.

This paragraph makes me want to punch babies.

I basically hate title IX. It's the sole reason I didn't continue to play soccer after my JUCO days.

Granted I could have played at various private schools but good god those are expensive and without being able to offer sports schollys at a bunch of them it was often times tough to get enough money.

For the player that isn't on the clemson, maryland, akron, ucla level (aka me), but wants to play ball possibly for the school they've supported their whole life, it blows.

I agree with all of you, it is outdated and needs to be reworked.

Title IX overall has been good for sports in our country, but it needs to be reworked.

I think that sex independent sports should not count against scholarships. In the current system, wrestling, cross-country (frick me), soccer, and other non-revenue men's sports all get raped from Title IX.

Seems like it may be more of a NCAA issue rather than LSU:

I wonder how many scholly's we give out for tennis/swimming/diving etc?

And how many kids play tennis as compared to soccer? I hate to generalize, but most tennis players can probably afford tuition at LSU

Not sure. Baseball gets a whopping 11.7. Scholarship rules are very messed up

Well this answers the question:

quote:

Here’s a basic rundown of the scholarships other sports received in the FY2011 report: women’s basketball gave 14 scholarships worth $581,080, men’s basketball gave 11.5 worth $440,269, volleyball gave 12.5 worth $439,946, gymnastics gave 16 worth $573,785, and men’s and women’s tennis combined for 13 scholarships worth $441,048.

eta:
quote:

Using LSU’s FY2011 NCAA Financial Report numbers, most sports are able to fill out roughly three-fourths of their roster with athletes who receive a full-ride scholarship. If LSU’s sports teams still used the same number of scholarships listed in the report, the women’s basketball team, gymnastics team and women’s golf team would be 100-percent covered with scholarships, the men’s basketball team would be 88 percent covered and the volleyball team would be 75 percent covered.

It's a baseball story, but it covers the general topic fairly well. LINK

Good read, thanks for sharing. Like some of you others, I would have killed to play for LSU.

Ultimately it's going to be up to us as a fanbase to demand it.

I'm just a lurker, but I know the power of the Rant.. if we can nickname the HB and solve murder mysteries, we can get a f'n soccer team.
