Not sure how I'd feel about that.

Yeah, I heard about this. I like the idea of movies based on novels being split into multiple films if that means staying truer to the novel. But The Hobbit into 3? The Lord of The Rings novels are all longer than The Hobbit and they stayed at 1 movie per book.

Originally there was going to be the hobbit and a bridge movie between LOTR.

Then they dumped the bridge film and split The Hobbit to make more bank.

Now they have decided to make even more bank by adding the 3rd.

I didn't love the added material to LOTR so I am not sure how I feel about a 3rd flick.

Because of this money grab I will find "other" ways to watch the films when I would have paid to see the movie originally.

Come on. I am not sure how I feel about 2 films, but if they do three, I'll be pissed. That would be the ultimate milking of a novel. I don't doubt they've filmed enough to encompass 3 films, but just save them for the Extended Editions. They will suck if they split it into 3 films instead of the original vision. They won't flow.

Hey. Search worked. I was certain this had been posted on.

Peter Jackson's Official Statement

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Peter J

I'm totally down with the reasoning and I'm super excited to see what they do.

The 3rd movie will be almost entirely made up of material from the Appendices at the back of Return of the King, not The Hobbit being stretched out to milk money(although certainly they know the profit margins).

What fan would not want this made?

If anyone has not read the Appendices, I highly suggest it.

I'd rather them make the Simarillion

DOH!

Many fans do not seem to be aware of the fact that Peter Jackson is not legally permitted to use material from other books such as The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-earth, or even The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and The Road Goes Ever On. And all the information published in The History of Middle-earth and The History of The Hobbit is equally off-limits. This much was made very clear to me by the people at Weta who asked me to help them with research for the “Lord of the Rings” movies.

This is surprising. The Hobbit is possibly my favorite book of all time but I see it being pretty hard to split three ways. There's going to be much higher Jackson to Tolkien ratio than in the LOTR trilogy.

This makes me sad.

How awesome would it be to see Melkor ruin the creation of middle earth? Or something with Morgoth on a path of destruction?

Or something with Gothmog.

The Silmarillion should be an animated series. there is no way a live action will do it justice

I remember being pissed when we didn't get any of Shelob in the second movie. The Return of the King might be my favorite movie of all time though, so it isn't as if they disapointed me later.
