The CCNY point shaving scandal in the 50s was a pretty big deal. Included 7 schools and kept the NCAA Tournament out of New York for almost 35 years.

The death of the player at Baylor who was murdered by his teammate was huge too.

This is up there though.

But the gravity of the SMU situation pales in comparison. Paying Eric Dickerson huge sums of cash and cheating, even if it included the Governor, is far less disturbing than grown men, including St. Joe, covering up and turning a blind eye to a man raping young children.

Yes indeed. But realize he was convicted of 45 counts of one form of rape or another and all of his superiors were aware it was happening on school grounds for 14 years!

I made this thread because some guy on another topic that said "they are trying to dig up stuff and make this bigger than it really is"

Generation now!!!! Whatever is happening now is always the biggest!
Florida state cheaters!
Scam newton!
Tattoo gate!
Ped state!

Are you talking about sports or entire schools? Because point shaving is worse than murder in the ncaa.

This is bigger than all of those combined.

We are talking about covering up 45 counts of rape and allowing a predator access to children to molest under a President/AD/Head Coach of a major state university.

It's sickening.

This is correct. Covering up rape by one of their own is about as bad as it gets.

Sorry, I was just naming pretty big scandals but I agree this is a big big deal. Not trying to take away from that at all or say child molestation is comparable to point shaving.

Re: The CCNY deal

Kentucky was the only program to survive what went down after that. Bradley is the only one to ever make it back into the polls. Pretty big deal when multiple programs get shutdown for good.

Honestly the only thing that comes to mind as being worse would be covering up a murder.

Knowing that this guy will continue to rape kids and not report it, and cover it up effects peoples lives forever. No one truly was hurt long term for the SMU situation if it weren't ever brought out.

athletic issues should be separated with criminal issues, such as the PSU case

not letting Negros play sports

Mae west sleeping ( sex) with the USC football team

I think there has probably been many cases of players raping coeds and it being covered up( thats next BTW) when one of these victims makes bank and they deserve it.
some chick is gonna go public about being raped and being coerced into covering it up

I think if we're talking about things of this gravity, the things that went down at Baylor when Patrick Dennehy was murdered by his teammate is probably comparable. You had multiple teammates threatening each other, buying guns to protect themselves, and then one going off the reservation and shooting then decapitating his teammate.

That was some crazy, crazy shite as well.

The cover-up and knowledge that he was very VERY likely to do it again and he was still allowed access to PSU facilities makes this much worse to me.

Obviously the Baylor sitch was crazy as hell, but.

fricking dumb, none of the things you listed is even remotely close to what went down at Penn St. Not even in the same universe.

SMU was bigger as far as actual on-field effect. But this is of course a whole different level altogether.
