Went to a LSU Alumni event this weekend and had the chance to hear Billy Cannon speak.
He was gracious and very nice to everyone, took time with every person who came to get his autograph.
He told some stories from his playing days and seemed like he'd get out on the field today if they would let him! He had some comments on this past year, and basically said he was as disappointed as we all were with the Championship Game. You could tell he really loves LSU.
He likes Miles, but does not like the play calling that has been going on. He thinks Mett will be really good!
I really enjoyed hearing him speak. A buddy sent me this picture from the event.

I met him several years ago at an event in Arlington, TX. As you said, he was very gracious and seemed like a reasonable person.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, and correct me if mistaken but I believe a track enthusiast told me several years ago that Billy was both a great sprinter and discus thrower as well.

When they announced him they said he won the SEC 100-Yard dash at 9.5 and also took first in the SEC Shot Put!

Billy could have been a very good decathlete...not world class, but nationally ranked.

I took a course with Cannon at LSU: Medical Greek and Latin. He was planning to be a dentist and I had hypochondria.

Im sure he personalized every autograph. He doesnt like his autographs being sold so he always makes them out to someone's name.

ya gotta read the history of alvin roy, the first s&c coach of lsu '58.

alvin roy served in army in ww2. he worked w/ us army olympic weigth lifting team. he brought weight lifting back to n.br. and istrouma and...
billy cannon.

i agree cannon was an incredible beast, but his weight training by roy was a definite help.

Just consider that back then, Cannon was a physical beast who ran a 9.5, and played almost the whole game, both ways, as there was not free substitution back then. Roster size was no more than 40 as best I recall, too. As much as he is famous for his run against O. Miss, he & W.Rabb made the goal line stand almost by themselves when O.Miss had first & goal inside the 5 yd. line, inside the final minute, & got stuffed on 4 straight running plays. Cannon & Rabb made the final hit on the 1 yd line
