1996 Volvo Penta 5.7 inboard outboard engine.

Just got it out of the shop last week after replacing the starter, fuel filters, and an oil change.

Took it out on the water Thursday and it ran great for the first hour or so. Ran it wide open a little bit, stopped to swim, started back every time with no problems.

Well after about an hour or so I started it up and as I began to give it gas the engine stalled out and died. I was able to get it started a few times, but it would eventually stall and die after a little bit of gas.

I am hoping its just the engine gummed up from old fuel. The tank I was using was from late last year before I stored it for the winter.

What are my solutions?

I have read a little online about people with similar issues and hope if I drain the fuel tank, add some fuel system cleaner it will be ready for the 4th of July.

Any advice, suggestions, or experience is appreciated.

Sounds like water in your tank. Add a second water filter from your tank to engine to keep this from happening again.

That's what a guy at work recommended.

They sell it any where locally? West Marine maybe?

Heard you were stranded the other day. Thought we were gonna have to send the False River rescue team.

Yea dude, it frigg'n sucked!

Naturally it would happen after we get to the complete opposite side of the river just before dark. Luckily we were able to flag down some good ol'boy in a small bass boat that was willing to tow us back to the closest landing.

To top it off, after getting the boat loaded on the truck I catch a flat as I am pulling out of the landing. Spare tire? Not so much! It apparently got stolen while it was parked on 72nd street last week at my mechanics house.

Ended up having to park it at the Wal-Mart out there that was conviently closed, untrailered it, and double timed it back to Zachary to buy a new spare. We did not end up getting home till almost damn near 1:00am.

Moral of the story: frick owning a boat!

ETA: If you see Bulldog this week make sure you let him know again how much I appreciated his help.

Is your engine carbed or injected? First thing to do is remove the fuel filter and dump what is in it in a clear jar to see if you have any water in your fuel tank.

Second thing to do is check to see if your fuel pump is working. Chances are that you have an electric fuel pump if the boat is not that old. If you do have this, just disconnect the discharge hose and crank the engine over. Watch out, if pump is good, gas will shoot out.

Try these things and get back to me.

Make sure you're not towing 16" of weedeater line. That'll bog the engine down.

Really sounds like the fuel pump is getting weak.
If you have a primer bulb have a friend pump it when the motor starts bogging down and see it it runs better. If so then suspect the fuel pump.
