Do it. The first time I ate there, I ended up popping a button on my jeans

I've always wanted to try it, too. Has anybody ever had their buffet? I don't have much experience with Indian cuisine, so I think that may be my best option. Are their buffet items as good as their menu items?

Not a huge fan of the Nepalese cuisine. As for the straight-up Indian dishes, Bay Leaf does them better.
I go to Himalayas every five-six months hoping I'll gain a taste for it, but always leave uninspired.
I went to a Tibetan place in the Bowery (ETA: It may have been in the East Village on Bleecker now that I think about it) once. It was called the Angry Monk, but it's no longer there. I remember being far more impressed by Tibetan food than the Nepalese food I had years later at Himalayas. But man, Angry Monk was back in about 97 or 98, so it's hard for me to remember anything more than just my general reaction to the place. I do distinctly remember a really good, and very different, mint tea at the Tibetan place.

people i know who like indian food love it. i freaking hate it.
i'd rather go to waka house 1/2 mile away. cucumber salad, tuna sashimi, mango shrimp tempura roll, katsumoto roll, & karadynamite roll. die happy.

I'm somewhat of an Indian food savant
Just go to Bay Leaf

The stand-by for beginners are the tandoori (chicken baked in a clay pot). It's baked in spices spices like ginger and garlic. Pretty good.
Then you have your curry-type dishes. Chicken Tikka Masala is a good beginner's dish on this. Thick, curry sauce with a tomato base that smothers chunks of the tandoori chicken and served over balsamic rice.
They usually bring bread (naan) to the table and some thin, wafer-like bread, almost like a chip, that comes with a couple of dipping sauces. The sweet one (I think it's Mango Chutney) is really good.
Again, if you are going to order off the Indian menu, I'd suggest going down the street a little ways to Bay Leaf, which does it better. If I'm going to Himalayas, I'm going to order off the Nepalese menu. I recall some dumplings in particular that were pretty good.
But all in all, it's down the list in terms of Asian cuisine for me.

That sounds good. The wife and I love curry dishes.
And that Bayleaf place does look pretty good.

Honestly to get better Indian food than Bay Leaf you'd have to go to Houston.

Sounds like a strong recommendation. Bayleaf looks a tad bit pricier than Himalayas, but I'm assuming it must be worth it.

Yeah it is a bit more expensive
Part of that is it's just a nicer facility, part of it is the food is several notches better
I would actually rank Himalayas as 3rd best Indian in Baton Rouge behind Bay Leaf and India's.

Their Indian dishes aren't that great, but the Nepalese section of the menu is pretty solid. I didn't care for the buffet.

I went to India's last week & enjoyed it; the prices are very good. I still need to try Bay Leaf & Himalayas. It seems like the general consensus is BR Indian food>Nola Indian food.
