The New Orleans Hornets announced today that the team has extended a qualifying offer to guard Eric Gordon for the 2012-13 season, making him a restricted free agent. Per team policy, financial details were not disclosed.

Gordon averaged a team-leading 20.6 points in addition to 3.4 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals in nine games (all starts) while shooting 45.0% from the field. The Hornets were 6-3 when Gordon played this season and he led the team in scoring in all but one of those contests.

We have to extend him the QO to make him Restricted.

Has no bearing on his long term deal. If he turns down all long term deals and just signs the QO, then things get very interesting.

Why are they doing this on draft day? To let Anthony Davis bury it because most people are clueless about NBA Free Agency and would freak out about Gordon not being signed all over again?

Tendering him means he is now an RFA.

He can either take the one year offer on the table from us, sign a longer deal with us, or shop for an offer sheet from another team.

If he signs an offer sheet, we have the right to match those terms and keep him.

Best case scenario is that a team offers him quickly and we match at their rate rather than what we can extend him (one less year and smaller per-year increases in pay).

Worst case scenario, since we'll match any offer, is that he takes the qualifying offer and becomes an unrestricted free agent next year.

A guess, but I'll ask.

Tomorrow will be busy, and that's the last work day of the month.

Human, all too human, reasons.

If we didn't extend the qualifying offer then Gordon would become an Unrestricted Free Agent and could sign with anyone he wants. It's just a paperwork thing for the Hornets to maintain their rights to him.

Doesn't matter, if the Hornets match the offer he's under contract to the Hornets. The whole point of Restricted Free Agency is to give the team the power to keep the player but they balance that power by giving the player a chance to get a fair market price.
