If my memory serves me, didn't Skip offer the job first to Tanner? I know Bianco was in the mix and turned it down as well as Tanner. Oh well, give Skip credit for trying anyway...

He was the man we needed. The center of the college baseball universe has moved to SC.

man I wish we could have gotten Tanner. They have passed us as the top program in the league currently. We're still the better program historically and we could return there. I'm not convinced Paul Mainieri could ever put a consistent team on the field like Tanner has. They are fricking DOMINANT in the post season

Tanner reminds me a lot of Skip. He has a magic feel for the game and every move he makes seems to work.

Everyone would love to have Tanner, including LSU. He is in his 3rd straight CWS final, 4th overall. The problem for LSU is the dream list doesn't stop at Tanner. I'd rather have Corbin, Cohen, Horton, Stricklin, Rooney, Van Horn, Casey, etc. over Mainieri as well.

Time to get Andy Lopez back to the sec? Might as well get in front of that bandwagon

Yes...after Smoke. Maineri was like 3rd or 4th choice? Nobody wanted to come here for some reason. I think Skip offered it to most of the names mentioned earlier in thread.

frick Corbin and Van Horn, I wouldn't want those guys anywhere near LSU.

Stricklin is an up and comer, former GT assistant, has built a good program in the mid west (probably the most consistent over the last few years, and would have been the best in the Big 10). But it's tough to say right now how much better he would be.

Pat Casey was at Oregon St for like 16 years before they ever did anything of note.

Rooney? Whatever.

Guys that impress me: Schlossnagle, McDonald, Childress, and obviously Tanner, but we'd never be able to get him.

Look at how much turnover they've (USC) had each of the last 3 years. Sure, some of the guys are the same, but he's working with a ton of new faces every year and still getting the same results. One scary thing to note is how many freshmen are playing key roles on their team this year.

While I think Tanner is a much better coach than PM, before this recent run they are on they went 5 straight years without a trip to Omaha and only hosted one regional during that span. I wonder what our fans would have thought about that.

It sucks that Tanner turned us down now.

I think LSU could probably had gotten him way back when Skip retired. Don't know if we even talked to him.

Skip had his hand in too many things, and Smoke was the only one that thought he could put up with it. Baseball Camp revenues, sponsorships, apparel deals, etc., and Bianco, Tanner, Wells, and others said no thanks after they heard the stories from Smoke.

This pretty much nails it. In no way is this a slap at PM. He is a good coach, but he doesn't have the magic touch that Tanner and Skip had. You can count on one hand the number of coaches who have had it.

Most of the USCe team is from SC, NC, and Va. Seems he does a good job of attracting local talent. PM has done a pretty good job of getting local talent, no?
