I'm getting into jug fishing for big catfish, and the Blues and Flatheads here prefer live shad as bait.
I purchased a good cast net and have refined my net throwing abilities to where I am competent enough to catch shad.

Problem is where to store these shad before getting them on jugs. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a bait tank just for jug lining catfish.

Will a 5 gallon bucket suffice long enough to get the shad in the water on a jug, or will I need to get some sort of aerated bait tank?

TIA for your help

I would think shad are a lot like pogies, and if so, you will need a fresh water recirculating fairly large system to keep them alive for any length of time. You can make your own with a bilge pump and some hose and a plastic garbage can. Size according to the size of your boat and how many baits you're trying to keep alive.

Buy a 55 gallon drum with a cover. Buy a GOOD aerator like they have at bait stands($150.00 bucks or more). Cut out hole in top so aerator can drop in.

I have a cage at a friend's pond that I put bream in. I put them in the livewell of my boat when I go set lines. I put a board over the hole with a hole cut out to drop my aerator in it for the trip there and while I'm setting.

I think this is what Im going to do.

The catfish in any quantity are to big for it anyway.

I just cant justify building or buying a huge bait tank just for running jugs.
