get one that wows you. no matter what anyone says, if it feels good in your hand, and you like the way it looks, you will want to pick it up and play it. if you dont have one, you cant possibly know what you like and dislike, so when people talk "value" its all relative to what you like and dislike vs the cost.

play a bunch of the ones in the store and buy the one you like, not the one for beginners or a genre.

Goto a guitar store and play 10 guitars, all different kinds. Spend an hour there and you'll have a pretty good idea of what you like.

As a general rule though, I wouldn't buy a guitar from a company that also makes motorcycles. Fender makes decent cheap acoustics.

So if he's "learning" to play guitar how would he know what he likes? I remember learning and I had NO CLUE what I "liked" and what "feels good". It all feels the same to a newbie.

Really any good brand acoustic will be good to learn on. Takamine, Fender, Ibanez are some good entry brands. Please don't spend over $500 on a first guitar...Have fun!

something under $200 on craigslist. Then take it to a music shop and have them restring it and tune it up for $25. Then strum it for a weekend before leaving it in the closet for a few years

I don't know a lot about guitars. I have been a beginner for about ten years now. I just sold my first guitar. It was a big baby taylor. I sold it to a pretty well known guitar instructor in the area. He said that was about the 60th one he's bought because it's what he likes to start high school kids off with.

Not true for drums...some of their high end drums are among the best.

Don't go too cheap and get the junky entry models. I am not saying break the bank, but the $150 guitar/amp combo is not the way to go. I agree with searching craigslist- you can get some decent used gear that is going to play just as well as new gear.

I recently bought my "first guitar" even though I have been playing guitar for years now... Just used my roommates or my sisters when I was younger.

Depending on how serious you are about playing and how much you are willing to pay should be a major consideration. I got one that was more expensive than I was planning on paying but I saw it and I fell in love. I cannot walk into my living room without putting it on and playing for a few minutes. I have had my roommates guitar (not as nice) in our living room and have never had the urge to pick it up nearly as much.

Overall, find what you like. I went more expensive than I was going to because I knew I'd be playing it for a while and I wanted one that I would be proud to play in 3 years when I had gotten better.
